Founded in 1957 in Oyster Bay, the State University of New York at Stony Brook is commonly referred to as Stony Brook University (SBU), found as a State University college on Long Island it was moved to Stony Brook, New York in 1962 and is a public space-grant and sea-grant research university and is one of the four University Centres of State University of New York system. The university consists of around 220 major buildings with a total of 1454 acres of land. The university is a member of the larger Universities Research Association and was elected to Association of American Universities in 2001. The Stony Brook Medicine, the medical and health science component of the university includes- Schools of Nursing, Dental Medicine, Health Technology and Management, Medicine, Social Welfare and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences along with the hospital, clinics and community-based healthcare settings, the Long Island State Veterans Home and major centers and institutes, programs and clinics. US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory of whose management team, Stony Brooks is a part in 2004 acquired land for Research and Development park which now lies adjacent to the main campus. More than 26,254 students are studying in the university along with approximately 15,000 employees and more than 2,700 faculty staff making the university the largest single site employer in Long Island. The intercollegiate athletic team of the University known as Seawolves have been competing in NCAA's Division I since 1994 and are a part of the Colonial Athletic Association, America East Conference and Missouri Valley Conference.
