Saint Joseph's University (SJU or St. Joe's) was established in 1851 by the Society of Jesus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Started as Saint Joseph’s College, St. Joseph’s University is the 7th oldest Jesuit university in the USA and the 28th member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The university was founded with a vision of achieving academic excellence in all spheres of Christian lives. Religiously affiliated with the Catholic Church, today Saint Joseph’s University has 38 Jesuit living on campus in 10 faculties.
Saint Joseph’s University has five different areas of faculties including College of Arts & Sciences, Haub School of Business, School of Health Studies and Education, Program of Professional & Liberal Studies and Haub Degree Completion Program. Through these faculties, the university offers 60 undergraduate, 53 postgraduate, 28 study abroad options and 12 special study options and programs. Saint Joseph’s University also offers doctoral programs and has ties with Thomas Jefferson University for joint degree programs. Apart from these, the university is comprised of well established 17 research centers and institutes who are well regarded for their research at national and international level. It has centers focusing purely on Business Ethics.
Today, with 38 Jesuits living on campus, Saint Joseph’s University has 9000+ students with 500+ academic staff spread across the three campuses. The main campus is 114-acre land which is situated in the City Avenue. The main campus is comprised of most of the buildings, housing and libraries. The second campus, James J. Maguire '58 Campus, is named after Saint Joseph’s alumni James Maguire. Situated at the lower Merion side of the City Avenue, it’s a 38-acre campus which has three main buildings including Merion Hall, Connelly Hall, and Toland Hall and also the University Gallery. The third campus, the Overbrook Campus is located near the Overbrook Train Station, about a mile from the main campus. The campus has six dorms and apartments for the students and also has an Alumni House.
