History, Affiliations and Rankings
Michigan Technological University was first set up as the Michigan Mining School in Houghton in 1885 and had been founded by the state of Michigan to train mining engineers to operate local copper mines effectively. The school was started with four teaching staff and 23 students on the second floor of Montezuma Avenue in Houghton. And with the passage of time, it expanded to a large university with a renowned name and fame.
Founded in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School, the state legislature established the school to train mining engineers after much agitation by Jay Abel Hubbell. MTU's first president was Marshman E. Wadsworth and during his tenure, the name was then changed to the Michigan College of Mines in 1897. The name lasted through World War I and the school had begun offering a wider variety of degrees. This led the university to again changed its name to the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1927.
J. Robert Van Pelt in 1956, became the new president of the university and restarted many PhD programs. During his final years of presidency, the school changed from a college to a university, which again led to changing its name to Michigan Technological University. The name "Michigan Technological University" was chosen in order to retain the nickname "Michigan Tech".

MTU campus is known to be one of the safest campuses in the country and offers numerous scopes of sports, recreation, cultural activities, and students from more than 100 countries. MTU offers more than 57 degree programs in engineering, science, mathematics, technology, business and the humanities both for bachelor's and master's degrees and also provides certificate programs such as Advanced Electric Power Engineering, Automotive Systems & Controls, Data Science, Hybrid Electric Drive Vehicle Engineering, Nanotechnology, Post Secondary STEM Education, Sustainable Water Resources and Sustainability.
Accomplishments and Alumni
MTU has created a name for itself among the top universities of the world owing to its legacy. It offers world-class education facilities and has a list of distinguished alumni member names. Some notable alumni include Melvin Calvin, Nobel laureate and discoverer of the Calvin Cycle, Chris Conner, NHL player and Jill Dickman, a Republican member of the Nevada Assembly.

Also, the campus becomes very welcoming for the students which helps the students to feel at home on foreign soil. The university has recorded an average placement rate of 93% and an average salary of 67,400 USD for outgoing students.
