Heidelberg University is an open research university which was established in 1386. It is known to be among the oldest universities in Germany and the 3rd in the Roman Empire. It became a coeducational institute in 1899. The university is in collaboration with Coimbra Group, EUA, German Universities, LERU and U15. Heidelberg University was built as per the model of the University of Paris. Initially, HU had four faculties, namely Theology, Jurisprudence, Philosophy, and Medicine. By the year 1390, around 185 students enrolled for the undergraduate degree program at the university. The classes began in the same year of establishment. In the 19th century, Natural Science, Medicine and Astronomy were added to the academic structure of the university. The university comprises of three campuses, namely Old Town Campus, Neuenheimer Feld Campus, and the Bergheim Campus. The Old Town Campus consists of assembly halls, lecture halls, seminar rooms and the faculties of social science and humanities. Neuenheimer Feld is the new campus which was built in 1960. It is known to be the largest campus among the three and includes the faculties of natural science and life sciences. In addition, the Cancer Research Centre of Germany is also located within this campus. It also has a parking space for the students, faculty members as well as visitors. The third campus, Bergheim Campus houses the departments of sociology, political science, and economics. Also, it features a modern library. It consists of about 6.7 million books and papers and is known to be the best library in Germany. Heidelberg University offers an undergraduate degree program, postgraduate degree program and doctoral level programs. Presently, there are 15, 289 students in the undergraduate program, 11, 871 in the postgraduate program and 3,024 in the doctoral course program. Moreover, about 500 international scholars visit the university to deliver guest lectures every year. Approximately 5,118 students are pursuing a postgraduate degree program at the university. Also, the student exchange program gives a number of opportunities for the students to learn and understand a different curriculum. The faculty makes sure that the students gain ample knowledge and practical exposure under their guidance. The university consists of 12 faculties; some of them are the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Biosciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Modern Languages, Faculty of Earth Sciences and Chemistry, Faculty of History and the Faculty of Mathematics. The university has a notable list of alumni that includes Robert Schumann (Classical composer), Gottfried Keller (Renowned poet), Dmitri Mendeleev (Creator of the periodic table), Alfred Wegener (Discoverer of the Continental drift), Judith Butler (Gender Theorist), Karl Mannheim (Sociologist) and Max Weber (Father of Modern Sociology).
