Deakin University was established in 1974, and was given this name after Alfred Deakin, who was an Australian Prime Minister. Deakin University is the first university in Australia to offer distance education programs. There are various disciplines offered by the university for students choose from, such as Psychology, Social Development, Health, Business, and Nursing. TheQS Wharton Reimagine Education Global Award and the Bronze Oceania Award have been granted to the university. Deakin University is spread across 4 campuses in Australia itself. The first campus of the university, which is also its main campus is the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, which comprises of approximately 800 students. Following this in 1893, another campus was inaugurated which houses around 5000 students. The locations decided for the campuses are surrounded by gyms, medical stores, restaurants, cafes, and few other stores to make the necessary items available to students. The Australian Research Council invested about 8 million dollars to the university for its 23 research projects. The university offers a number of subjects like environmental sciences, humanities, medicine, information technology, business, law, psychology, and social science. Spread across multiple disciplines, Deakin University offers 150 postgraduate and 100 undergraduate programs. Moreover, this university has produced a list of notable alumni such as Briony Cole (Gold Medalist, Commonwealth Games 2006), Emma Alberici (Journalist, ABC), Julie Attwood (Member of Legislative Assembly, Queensland), and Carolyn Hardy (CEO, UNICEF).
