Renowned for its Chinese language courses, Beijing Language and Culture was founded in 1962. The Chinese name of the university is Yuyan Xueyuan. The university also accounts for teaching different foreign languages to their native students. It offers various bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs and doctoral courses. It comprises of various faculties of foreign languages. Wei-Heng Chen, Valerie Grosvenor Myer (Literary Historian), Laing Xiao Sheng (Screenwriter and Novelist) are notable faculty members of the university.
Currently, it is home to more than 8,812 students enrolled in various language courses offered by the university. The university is nicknamed as Bei Yu and its main campus is situated in Haidian which is a district in Beijing. It is the only language learning institute in China. The university comprises of around 1,211 academic staff members out of which around 600 are teaching staff and others are administrative staff. The campus has special dorms known as “Little United Nations” provided for international students.
