When calcium is added to water, it reacts slowly and forms calcium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chemical equation for this reaction is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ca (s) + 2H\u2082O (l) \u2192 Ca(OH)\u2082 (aq) + H\u2082 (g)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this reaction, calcium (Ca) reacts with water (H\u2082O) to form calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)\u2082], which is a slightly soluble base, and hydrogen gas (H\u2082) is released. You may observe bubbles forming on the surface of calcium due to the release of hydrogen gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Observation and Explanation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When calcium is added to water, it sinks because it is denser than water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A mild effervescence is observed as hydrogen gas is slowly released.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The solution becomes slightly milky due to the formation of calcium hydroxide, which is only slightly soluble in water and forms a suspension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The resulting solution is basic in nature and turns red litmus paper blue, indicating its alkalinity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This reaction is less vigorous than the reaction of alkali metals like sodium and potassium with water.
