The Constitution is like the school rulebook that tells everyone how to behave, what their rights are, and how they should work together. On 26 January 1950, India’s Constitution came into force, replacing the British laws and giving India its identity as an independent republic.

But why 26 January? This date was chosen to honour the Purna Swaraj Declaration of 1930 when leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and others declared India’s complete independence from British rule during the Lahore Session of Congress.

Since then, Republic Day is celebrated every year with grand parades, flag hoisting, and cultural events. The main celebration happens at Rajpath in New Delhi, where a big parade showcases India’s unity in diversity, military strength, and cultural heritage.

Fun Fact:

The first Republic Day parade in 1950 was attended by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, as he took the salute of the parade. It was a day filled with pride and excitement, just like the first day of a school annual day!

Quote to Remember:

“Justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity—these are the pillars of our Constitution”
Dr. B.
