However, for some students, it can also change their personal lives in the most unexpected ways. This was the case for East Carolina University (ECU) alumna Laurel Truelove Currie. Her study abroad experience in England not only shaped her career but also led her to the love of her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

A Journey Across the Pond: Studying in England<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2008, as an EC Scholar\u2014now known as a Brinkley-Lane Scholar\u2014Laurel was encouraged to step out of her comfort zone and study internationally. She chose to study at Manchester Metropolitan University in England, drawn to its strong mathematics program and familiar English-speaking environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving to a new country was both exciting and challenging. Laurel embraced the opportunity, immersing herself in the local culture, travelling around the UK, and forming close friendships with other students. One of these friendships would soon change her life forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Friendship to Love: An Unexpected Connection<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among her new connections was James Currie, a British student studying at the same university. Initially, they bonded over shared academic interests, college experiences, and cultural exchanges. They spent time exploring Manchester together, learning from each other\u2019s backgrounds, and building a strong friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Laurel returned to the U.S. in 2010, the two kept in touch. Despite the distance, their connection deepened, and they soon realized their relationship was more than just a study-abroad friendship. James later made a bold decision that would shape their future together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Love Across Borders: Making It Work<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Determined to explore their relationship further, James moved to the U.S. and enrolled at Pitt Community College in North Carolina. This allowed him to be closer to Laurel, and their relationship continued to grow. They navigated the challenges of cultural differences, long-distance communication, and adapting to new environments together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their love story reached its happiest chapter when they tied the knot in June 2014. From an international exchange program to a lifelong commitment, their journey shows how study abroad experiences can lead to much more than just academic learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laurel’s mother, Lea Ann Nichols, was deeply inspired by her daughter’s transformative experience. Recognizing the immense value of studying abroad, she decided to contribute to the Honors College priority fund during ECU\u2019s annual fundraising event, Pirate Nation Gives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nichols donated $5,000 to support high-impact study abroad experiences for students. She firmly believes that such opportunities help students develop a broader worldview, build confidence, and enhance career prospects. “It’s not just about education; it’s about experiencing the world in a whole new way,” she shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
