Characteristics of a Good Leader

Q.1. What qualities make a good leader?

Ans. A good leader possesses a mix of essential qualities. Firstly, they are good communicators, which is crucial for conveying their vision and goals to the team. For example, I once had a manager who always ensured that the entire team knew what was expected of us, keeping everyone on the same page and aligned with our objectives. Secondly, a great leader demonstrates empathy and understanding, recognizing and addressing their team’s feelings and needs.

During my school days, my PT teacher exemplified this by always knowing when someone was having a tough day and taking the time to check in and offer support, significantly boosting the team’s confidence and morale. These qualities—effective communication and empathy—are fundamental in making a good leader.

Q.2. Can leadership skills be taught, or are they innate?

Ans. That’s an interesting question! I think it’s a bit of both. Some people are naturally inclined to leadership roles, they just have that charisma and can inspire others from a young age. For example, one of my best friends has always been a go-to person in group projects since elementary school because people would naturally follow her lead. However, I believe that leadership skills can also be taught and developed over time.

Many training programs and workshops focus on improving communication, decision making and emotional intelligence. I used to be quite shy, but after taking a leadership course in college and getting some hands-on experience in student organisations, I became much more confident in leading groups.

2. Leadership in the Workplace

Q.1. How do leadership styles vary between different industries?

Ans. Leadership styles vary a lot depending on the industry. For instance, in the tech industry, you often see a more collaborative and innovative approach. Leaders tend to encourage creativity and are more out of their thinking. Once I got an opportunity to do an internship at a tech startup and my team leader always used to sit with us for brainstorming sessions and open discussions which was really refreshing.

On the other hand, when it comes to industries like finance or manufacturing, leadership styles are more hierarchical and structured. Leaders of these companies focus more on efficiency and following established protocols. For example, one of my cousins works in a bank, he once told me that his manager is very strict about procedures and regulations, which makes sense given the nature of their work.

Q.2. How should leaders handle conflicts in the workplace?

Ans. Handling conflicts in a workplace is very tricky but is super important. I think the best approach is to address issues head-on but with empathy. Good leaders listen to both sides of the story and then conclude. For example, if two team members are having a disagreement, a leader should sit down with them, understand their perspectives, and then help find a common ground. Also, maintaining a calm and neutral stance is crucial.

I’ve seen managers who get too emotional or take sides, and it only makes things worse. In my last job, my manager always stayed calm and composed during conflicts, which really helped de-escalate tense situations.

3. Gender and Leadership

Q.1. Are there differences in leadership styles between men and women?

Ans. I think there are some differences in leadership styles between men and women, although I believe it’s not always the case. Generally, people say that men are more authoritative or directive in style, while women tend to be more collaborative and empathetic. For example, in my previous job, my male manager was very focused on targets and often made quick decisive decisions.

On the other hand, our female team leader always used to foster teamwork and always made sure everyone’s opinions were heard before making decisions. Of course, these are just generalizations and there are plenty of exceptions as well. I’ve had female bosses who were very authoritative and male bosses who were incredibly supportive and team-oriented. So, while there might be some tendencies, individual personality and the specific context matter a lot more.

Q.2. Why do you think there are fewer women in leadership positions?

Ans. There are several reasons why there are fewer women in leadership positions. One big factor is the historical and cultural biases that have long favoured men in leadership roles. Traditionally, leadership qualities were often associated with traits that are stereotypically considered masculine, like assertiveness and decisiveness. This has made it harder for women to be seen as natural leaders.

Additionally, women often face more challenges balancing work and family responsibilities. Many workplaces still don’t offer enough support for working mothers, such as flexible hours or adequate parental leave. For example, a friend of mine had to turn down a promotion because the higher position required longer hours, and she couldn’t manage that with her childcare responsibilities.

Prev (10th July)

Are you preparing for IELTS?
