You must also pass the German Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB), which is essentially a university entrance examination.

There are no specific tests for international students seeking to study undergraduate courses in Germany; however, your high school grades must meet the requirements of the university to which you are applying. Some universities require you to pass the FSP, also known as the Feststellungsprüfung. This is essentially an exam designed to assess your readiness to enrol in a course. Universities administer the exam separately, so the dates vary.

For PG Courses

To study master’s courses in Germany, you must meet the basic eligibility criteria, though the university you are applying to may have additional requirements. However, the conditions remain consistent across universities. The following are the main requirements you should be aware of when applying for a master’s degree at a German university:

Before enrolling in master’s programmes in Germany, you should have completed your bachelor’s degree. Universities may maintain a percentage bar for the bachelor’s degree, which will be primarily defined in the course prospectus.

To apply to a German university, you must pass several international exams such as TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, GMAT [depending on your programme requirements], and so on.

If you want to pursue programmes taught in German, you must first pass the TestDaF or DSH exams. TestDaf 4 is widely accepted at the majority of the country’s universities.

Cost of Studying in Germany

The cost of studying is divided into two categories: Tuition fees and living expenses. The cost of studying in Germany is given below

Tuition Fees

One reason Germany is a renowned study-abroad destination is that public universities in Germany do not charge tuition for undergraduate or master’s programmes, even for international students. They do, however, charge an administrative fee of 100-350 Euros (8,678 – 30,374 INR) per semester.

Private universities, on the other hand, charge tuition fees that are significantly lower than fees in the United States, the United Kingdom, or Australia. The tuition fees for UG and PG programmes are as follows

Study Program

Average Tuition Fees

Undergraduate Degree

26,000 Euros per year (INR 22.56 Lakh)

Master’s Degree

40,000 Euros per year (INR 34.71 Lakh)

Living Expenses

International students in Germany typically spend between 700 (INR 60,749) and 1000 (INR 86,785) Euros per month on living expenses. The cost of living will include food, lodging, transportation, and so on. Living expenses in larger cities such as Berlin or Frankfurt will range between 900 (INR 78,106) and 1,500 (INR 1.30 Lakh) Euros per month, while smaller cities such as Hannover or Leipzig will range between 750 (INR 65,088) and 1,100 (INR 95,463) Euros per month.

Scholarships

International students who want to study in Germany in 2025 can apply for scholarships from public and private organisations. In addition, there are independent research institutes that provide scholarships to students and researchers. Here are some of the most popular scholarships available in Germany:

The DAAD scholarship

Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarship

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarship

Erasmus Scholarship Program

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship

Read about the 9 Best Part-Time Jobs in Germany: Salary & Recruiters

Other great European countries to study and work

Apart from Germany, there are other European countries that should be on your list if you want to study abroad in Germany.
