In IELTS Speaking Part 3, the topic of shopping allows candidates to delve into various aspects, such as the rise of online shopping, its impact on traditional markets, and the role of advertising in shaping buying behaviour. These follow-up questions provide an opportunity to discuss the social, cultural, and economic factors influencing shopping habits, while also showcasing critical thinking and linguistic proficiency.

Q.1. Why do some people choose to do their shopping in a street market rather than the shopping mall?

Ans- There are several reasons for this. Firstly, street markets often offer a unique and vibrant atmosphere that cannot be replicated in a shopping mall. For instance, I recall visiting a street market during a vacation in Thailand. The lively atmosphere, with colourful stalls, fragrant food vendors, and traditional music, created an immersive cultural experience that I couldn’t find in a shopping mall. Plus, street markets are known for their wide variety of fresh and locally sourced products. During my visit to a street market in my hometown, I was able to buy freshly harvested fruits and vegetables directly from local farmers, ensuring their quality and supporting the local economy.

Q.2. Do you think that discounted goods have good value?

Ans- Discounted goods can offer good value depending on the circumstances. From my personal experience, I have found discounted goods to provide excellent value in certain situations. For instance, last year I needed to purchase a new winter coat. I came across a discounted sale at a reputable clothing store, where I found a high-quality coat at a significantly reduced price. The coat was of good value as it was durable, stylish, and provided excellent warmth during the winter season. However, it is important for consumers to exercise caution and consider factors such as the original price, quality, and their specific needs when assessing the value of discounted items.

Q.3. How often do people in your country go shopping?

Ans- The frequency of shopping varies among individuals in my country. While there is no definitive answer, it is common for people to engage in shopping activities at least once or twice a week. Personally, I usually go shopping once a week for groceries and household necessities. However, I have friends who prefer to shop more frequently, especially for fashion items or to take advantage of special promotions and sales.

Q.4. What kinds of places are popular for shopping in your country?

Ans- In my country, a diverse range of shopping destinations is popular among consumers. Shopping malls are a prevalent choice as they offer a wide variety of stores and amenities. For example, one of the most popular shopping malls in my city has a multitude of clothing stores, electronic retailers, entertainment options such as cinemas, and a range of dining establishments. Department stores also remain popular, particularly for individuals seeking a mix of brands and product categories under one roof. Moreover, traditional markets and street bazaars are highly popular for those looking for unique items, local handicrafts, and a more immersive cultural experience.

Q.5. Do you think online shopping will replace shopping in reality?

Ans- While online shopping has gained significant popularity in recent years, I believe it will only partially replace shopping in physical stores. Online shopping offers convenience and a wide selection of products, but it cannot replicate the sensory experience and personal interaction that physical shopping provides. For instance, trying on clothes, physically examining the quality of products, and engaging with salespeople for recommendations are experiences that currently need to be more challenging to replicate online. Also, some individuals still prefer the social aspect of physically going out to shop with friends or family. Hence, I believe that online shopping will continue to coexist with traditional shopping, offering consumers a choice based on their preferences and needs.

Q.6 What Is the Impact of Online Shopping on Traditional Markets?

Online shopping has reduced the number of traditional shoppers. The reason is, that online shopping is convenient, provides a lot of choices, and often are listed in a low price. However, despite its benefits, online shopping lacks the in-person experience provided by a local market. Traditional shopping is still relevant for products that people want to purchase in person.

Q.7 Do People Buy More or Less During Sales?

During sales people purchase more. It triggers their impulse buying. Sales create a perception of saving money. Therefore, the purchases tend to be higher. However, those who are smart only purchase things that they need. That is, even during a sale. Some shoppers may purchase stuff that they don;t need only because they are discounted.

Q.8 How Has the Concept of Shopping Changed in Recent Years?

Online shopping provides several choices for people. People now prefer online shopping to traditional shopping. The traditional method of purchasing items have now just become more of a recreational activity. Moreover, customers now look for ethical and sustainable products. The coming of technology like Augmented reality, and AI is changing the way people shop.

Q.9 How Do Consumer Preferences Differ Between Different Age Groups?

Consumer preferences vary depending on age. For instance, a young customer would prefer online shopping because it offers variety and is convenient. On the other hand, older generations prefer traditional shopping experiences. The price sensitivity can also vary. The younger generations prefer trends, and the older consumers prefer value for money. Moreover, different age groups like to purchase different kinds of products.

Explore Some Fantastic Topics on IELTS Topics

Vocabulary for IELTS: Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Word Power

50+ Universities Accepting Low IELTS Scores: Country-Wise Universities, Score Requirement

IELTS Accepting Universities in the USA: For MS, MBA, Low IELTS Band Universities

IELTS Score for Canada: Student Visa, and PR

Successfully preparing for the IELTS Speaking Section, particularly the cue card and follow-up questions in Part 2, requires consistent practice, a clear strategy, and the right resources.
