If you are confused between the concept of using common and proper nouns then you are at the right place. What are Common Nouns?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Common nouns are the type of nouns<\/strong><\/a> that are used to refer to the name of persons, places, things, animals, or ideas that are not specific. Therefore, the ordinary names given to the name of a person, place, thing, animal, or idea are called common nouns. In this sense, it differs from, proper nouns that refer to the particular name of the person, place, things, animals, or ideas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us understand both types with the help of an example<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sita <\/strong>went to the <\/strong>temple<\/strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this example, Sita is the proper noun because it is the name of a specific girl whereas temple is the common noun. After all, every temple is named a temple.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sita<\/strong> went to the Golden Temple<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this example, both Sita and Golden Temple are proper nouns because they are the specific name of the person and the temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of Common Nouns\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Common Nouns are the building blocks that are commonly used in English sentences. They can be divided into four categories. Let\u2019s understand them one by one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Countable Common Noun<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the name suggests, anything that can be counted or measured in fingers comes under countable nouns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. I have three apples in my bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. There are five chairs around the table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. She owns two cats and a dog.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Uncountable Common Noun<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These are the exact opposite of Countable nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be countered in terms of exact numbers. They have to be measured in terms of quantities rather than numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Collective Common Noun\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You can call a group or a unit that is similar by nature a Collective Common Noun.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. The herd of cattle grazed peacefully in the field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. The swarm of bees buzzed around the hive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. The team of experts worked together to solve the problem.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Concrete Common Noun<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        These are things that can be felt with our five senses and have a physical presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. The dog chased the ball.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. She admired the beautiful sunset.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        3. The children played in the park.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          How to Use Common Nouns?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          Without the use of common nouns, the sentences in English are incomplete. They should be used to carefully form the structure of the sentences. Here is an example:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          She said, \u201cI want to read.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          In the sentence examples given above, there is no usage of common noun. Therefore, making no indication about what she wants to read. This is why the addition of common noun in a sentence is used to make sentences accurate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
