Today I feel honoured to speak about Vijay Diwas, a special day celebrated on 16 December every year to mark India\u2019s victory in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. This day holds a deep meaning for our country because it reminds us of the bravery of Indian soldiers and the birth of a new nation, Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To understand why this day is so important, we must go back to the situation in East Pakistan in 1971. People there were facing very harsh conditions. They were not given equal rights, their language was insulted, and their leaders were jailed. The violence became so severe that nearly 1 to 3 million people lost their lives, according to many reports. More than 10 million people fled to India, seeking safety. India opened its borders and supported them with food, shelter, and medical help, even though our economy was still developing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation kept getting worse, and soon India had no choice but to take action for peace and stability. The war began when India supported the people of East Pakistan, who were facing violence and unfair treatment. After Pakistan launched air attacks on India on 3 December 1971, a full war started. In just 13 days, the Indian Armed Forces defeated the Pakistani military. On 16 December 1971, Pakistan\u2019s Lt. Gen. A. A. K. Niazi surrendered along with 93,000 soldiers, the largest military surrender since World War II.
