This historical development laid the foundation for the periodic law and the periodic table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dobereiner-s-triads-1829\">Dobereiner\u2019s Triads (1829)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Introduced by Johann Dobereiner, a German chemist. He grouped elements into triads \u2013 sets of three elements with similar properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Observations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The atomic weight of the middle element was approximately the average of the other two.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The properties of the middle element were intermediate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Limitation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Worked for only a few elements. It could not be extended to all known elements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dismissed as a coincidence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-newlands-law-of-octaves-1865\">Newlands\u2019 Law of Octaves (1865)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Proposed by John Newlands, an English chemist. Elements are arranged in increasing order of atomic weight. Noted that every eighth element had properties similar to the first, like musical octaves<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Limitation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Valid only up to calcium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Failed for heavier elements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not well accepted initially, but recognized later (Newlands received Davy Medal in 1887).<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mendeleev-s-periodic-law-1869\">Mendeleev\u2019s Periodic Law (1869)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed by Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian chemist. Proposed the Periodic Law:<br><br>&#8220;The properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic weights.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mendeleev arranged elements in a tabular form with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Horizontal rows (periods).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vertical columns (groups) with similar properties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Contributions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Used broad physical and chemical properties (e.g., oxides, chlorides) to group elements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prioritized similar properties over atomic weight when needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Left gaps in the table for undiscovered elements and predicted their properties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mendeleev\u2019s Predictions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mendeleev predicted new elements and left gaps in the table (e.g., Eka-aluminium and Eka-silicon).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These elements were discovered later as Gallium (Ga) and Germanium (Ge).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Significance:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mendeleev\u2019s success in predicting properties of unknown elements validated his Periodic Table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His work laid the foundation for the modern Periodic Table, later refined using atomic numbers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-ocean-gradient-background has-background\"><strong>Also Read: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leverageedu.com\/discover\/school-education\/ncert-notes-class-11-geography-fundamentals-of-geography-chapter-6-landforms-and-their-evolution\/\">NCERT Notes Class 11 Geography Fundamentals of Geography Chapter 6 Landforms and their Evolution (Free PDF<\/a>)<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-modern-periodic-law-and-the-present-form-of-the-periodic-table\">Modern Periodic Law and the Present Form of the Periodic Table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mendeleev classified elements based on increasing atomic weight, but some elements did not fit properly. Examples: Iodine (I) is placed after Tellurium (Te) despite a lower atomic weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-discovery-of-the-atomic-number-as-a-fundamental-property\">Discovery of the Atomic Number as a Fundamental Property<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1913, Henry Moseley, an English physicist, conducted experiments with X-ray spectra. He observed a regular pattern when the frequency of X-rays was plotted against atomic number (Z), not atomic mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This proved:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Atomic number (Z), not atomic weight, is the correct basis for classification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atomic number equals the number of protons (or electrons in a neutral atom).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-modern-periodic-law\">Modern Periodic Law<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The physical and chemical properties of elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This revised Mendeleev\u2019s law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explained the periodicity of properties based on electronic configuration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Structure of the Modern Periodic Table<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(A) Groups (Vertical Columns):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>18 groups, numbered 1 to 18 (as per IUPAC).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elements in the same group have:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Same valence shell configuration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Similar chemical properties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(B) Periods (Horizontal Rows):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>7 periods, representing the highest principal quantum number (n).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Number of elements per period:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1st: 2 elements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2nd &amp; 3rd: 8 elements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4th &amp; 5th: 18 elements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6th &amp; 7th: 32 elements (including f-block elements)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6th and 7th periods include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lanthanides (Z = 58\u201371)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Actinides (Z = 90\u2013103)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These are placed separately at the bottom to preserve table structure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electronic-configurations-and-the-periodic-table\">Electronic Configurations and the Periodic Table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The periodic table is not arranged randomly\u2014each element&#8217;s position is based on its electronic configuration. The distribution of electrons in an atom determines both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Its period (row) is based on the outermost shell&#8217;s principal quantum number (n).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s group (column) \u2013 based on the number of electrons in the valence shell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Period-Wise Configurations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each new period begins when electrons start filling a new principal energy level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of elements in a period is determined by the number of orbitals available in that energy level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As we move from left to right in a period:<br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Electrons are added successively to the same principal energy level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chemical properties gradually change due to increasing nuclear charge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Group-Wise Configurations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Elements in the same group have similar outer electronic configurations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This similarity in valence shell structure explains why elements in a group show similar chemical behavior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For example, all alkali metals (Group 1) have a single electron in their outermost s-orbital, which gives them similar reactivity and trends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Relationship with Quantum Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The electron configuration reflects the quantum numbers of the last electron added.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The period number corresponds to the highest value of n (principal quantum number).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The type of orbital being filled (s, p, d, or f) defines the block to which the element belongs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Classification into Blocks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Based on the subshell being filled, elements are divided into:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>s-block<\/strong>: Groups 1 and 2 (outer configuration ends in ns\u00b9 or ns\u00b2).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>p-block<\/strong>: Groups 13 to 18 (outer configuration ends in np\u00b9 to np\u2076).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>d-block<\/strong>: Transition elements (Groups 3 to 12), where (n\u20131)d orbitals are being filled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>f-block<\/strong>: Lanthanoids and actinoids, where (n\u20132)f orbitals are being filled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exceptions and Special Cases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hydrogen<\/strong>: Although it has a 1s\u00b9 configuration like alkali metals, it also resembles halogens in gaining an electron. This classification is supported by the Aufbau principle and the electronic configuration of elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-block-elements\">s-Block Elements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Electronic Configuration<\/strong>: ns\u00b9 to ns\u00b2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Position in the Periodic Table<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Found in Groups 1 and 2 on the left side of the periodic table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Includes: Alkali metals (Group 1) and Alkaline earth metals (Group 2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Properties:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Highly reactive metals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low ionization enthalpies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Readily lose electrons to form positive ions (M\u207a or M\u00b2\u207a).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Metallic character and reactivity increase down the group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never found free in nature due to high reactivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their compounds (except those of lithium and beryllium) are mostly ionic in nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-p-block-elements\">p-Block Elements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Electronic Configuration<\/strong>: General outer configuration: ns\u00b2 np\u00b9 to ns\u00b2 np\u2076<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Position in the Periodic Table<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Found in Groups 13 to 18, on the right side of the periodic table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Along with s-block elements, they form the main group or representative elements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Properties<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Show a wide range of properties: metals, non-metals, and metalloids.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The non-metallic character increases across a period (left to right).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The metallic character increases down a group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contains important groups like halogens (Group 17) and noble gases (Group 18).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Noble gases are chemically inert due to a completely filled valence shell.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elements like oxygen and fluorine have high electron gain enthalpy, making them highly reactive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-d-block-elements-transition-elements\">d-Block Elements (Transition Elements)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Electronic Configuration<\/strong>: General outer configuration: (n\u20131)d\u00b9\u207b\u00b9\u2070 ns\u2070\u207b\u00b2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Position in the Periodic Table<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Found in the center, spanning Groups 3 to 12.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Called transition elements because they form a bridge between s-block and p-block elements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Properties:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All are metals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often show variable oxidation states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tend to form colored compounds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exhibit paramagnetism due to unpaired electrons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frequently act as catalysts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The last three elements (Zn, Cd, Hg) are exceptions and don\u2019t show typical transition properties due to their completely filled d-subshells.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-f-block-elements-inner-transition-elements\">f-Block Elements (Inner Transition Elements)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Electronic Configuration<\/strong>: General outer configuration: (n\u20132)f\u00b9\u207b\u00b9\u2074 (n\u20131)d\u2070\u207b\u00b9 ns\u00b2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Position in the Periodic Table<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Placed separately at the bottom to keep the table compact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Includes two series:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lanthanoids (Z = 58 to 71)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Actinoids (Z = 90 to 103)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Properties<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All are metals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Within each series, elements show similar chemical properties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Actinoids exhibit variable oxidation states and complex chemistry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many actinoids are radioactive, and those beyond uranium are called transuranium elements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only minute quantities of some actinoids are known due to their instability and synthetic nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-metals-non-metals-and-metalloids\">Metals, Non-Metals, and Metalloids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this section, we have discussed about the metals, non-metals, and metalloids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-metals\">Metals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Metals are described below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make up over 78% of known elements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Usually exist as solids at room temperature (exceptions: mercury is liquid; gallium and cesium have low melting points).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show properties such as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High melting and boiling points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good conductivity of heat and electricity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Malleability (can be hammered into sheets)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ductility (can be drawn into wires)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-non-metals\">Non-Metals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-metals are described below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mostly found on the top right of the periodic table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exist as solids or gases at room temperature (e.g., oxygen, nitrogen).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have low melting and boiling points (exceptions: boron and carbon).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor conductors of heat and electricity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brittle in solid form; neither malleable nor ductile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-metalloids-semi-metals\">Metalloids (Semi-Metals)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Elements that border the zig-zag line (or &#8220;stair-step&#8221;) between metals and non-metals in the periodic table.
