However, experiments on electric discharge through gases revealed the existence of fundamental particles \u2014 electrons, protons, and neutrons, which are now known as sub-atomic particles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-discovery-of-the-electron\">Discovery of the Electron<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The discovery of the electron is discussed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Experiment<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>In the mid-1850s, discharge tube experiments (by J.J. Thomson and others) were conducted using a glass tube with electrodes at low pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Observations<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A stream of rays emerged from the cathode (negative electrode) and moved towards the anode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These rays produced a greenish glow on the glass coated with fluorescent material (zinc sulphide).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When a perforated anode was used, rays passed through and created a spot on the glass behind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Characteristics of Cathode Rays<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Travel in straight lines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Produce mechanical and heating effects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are deflected by electric and magnetic fields.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carry a negative charge and mass.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Independent of the nature of the gas and the electrodes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Cathode rays are made of negatively charged particles, later named electrons by J.J. Thomson in 1897.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-charge-to-mass-ratio-of-an-electron\">Charge to Mass Ratio of an Electron<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Measured by J.J. Thomson in 1897 using electric and magnetic fields. Charge to mass ratio of an electron:&nbsp; e\/m = 1.758 \u00d7 10\u00b9\u00b9 C\/kg. This value remained the same for all gases and cathodes used, proving that electrons are present in all atoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-charge-on-the-electron\">Charge on the Electron<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, we have provided a summary of information on the charge on the electron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Experiment: <\/strong>Millikan\u2019s Oil Drop Experiment (1906\u201314)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Principle<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oil droplets acquire a negative charge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their motion is observed under gravity and an electric field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The charge on a single drop was measured.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Result: <\/strong>Charge on electron, e = \u20131.602 \u00d7 10\u207b\u00b9\u2079 coulomb<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Combining with Thomson\u2019s e\/m ratio: <\/strong>Mass of electron, m = e \u00f7 (e\/m) = 9.109 \u00d7 10\u207b\u00b3\u00b9 kg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-discovery-of-protons-and-neutrons\">Discovery of Protons and Neutrons<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The discovery of protons and neutrons is discussed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protons (Discovered via Canal Rays)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Positive rays observed in discharge tubes with perforated cathodes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move in the opposite direction to the cathode rays.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Properties depend on the gas used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From hydrogen, the lightest positive particle was obtained, named a proton.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Charge of proton = +1.602 \u00d7 10\u207b\u00b9\u2079 C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mass of proton \u2248 1.672 \u00d7 10\u207b\u00b2\u2077 kg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Neutrons (Discovered by James Chadwick, 1932):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Beryllium bombarded with alpha particles released neutral radiation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These were named neutrons \u2014 particles with no charge but mass nearly equal to protons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Charge of neutron = 0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mass of neutron \u2248 1.675 \u00d7 10\u207b\u00b2\u2077 kg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-thomson-s-model-of-the-atom-1898\">Thomson\u2019s Model of the Atom (1898)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Also known as the &#8220;Plum Pudding Model&#8221; or &#8220;Watermelon Model&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The atom is a uniformly positive sphere with negatively charged electrons embedded in it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The positive charge balances the negative electrons so that the atom remains electrically neutral.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Like seeds (electrons) embedded in a watermelon (positive sphere), or plums in a pudding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explained the overall neutrality of atoms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduced the concept of the internal structure of atoms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Drawbacks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Could not explain the results of Rutherford\u2019s alpha scattering experiment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Failed to explain the stability of atoms and spectral lines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p (1911)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the Alpha Particle Scattering Experiment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conducted by Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden under Rutherford.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Setup: A thin gold foil (~1000 atoms thick) bombarded with fast-moving alpha particles (He\u00b2\u207a ions).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Observations:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most alpha particles passed through without deflection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some were deflected at small angles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Very few (1 in 20,000) bounced back or deflected at large angles.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most of the atoms have empty spaces, allowing particles to pass through.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positive charge and most mass are concentrated in a tiny central region \u2014 the nucleus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrons revolve around the nucleus like planets around the sun.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Postulates of Rutherford&#8217;s Model:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An atom has a dense, positively charged nucleus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrons move around the nucleus in circular orbits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The size of the nucleus is very small compared to the size of the atom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Limitations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Could not explain why electrons do not spiral into the nucleus (classical theory suggests and Mass Number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Atomic number and mass number are discussed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Atomic Number (Z):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Defined as the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It also equals the number of electrons in a neutral atom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Symbol: Z<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: For carbon, Z = 6 (6 protons)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mass Number (A)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The sum of the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formula:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A = Z + Number of neutrons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Example: For carbon-12, A = 12 (6 protons + 6 neutrons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-isobars-and-isotopes\">Isobars and Isotopes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Isobars and isotopes are discussed below<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Isotopes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Atoms of the same element (same atomic number) but different mass numbers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Example: \u2081H\u00b9, \u2081H\u00b2 (deuterium), \u2081H\u00b3 (tritium).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All are hydrogen isotopes with 1 proton, but different neutrons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Isobars<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Atoms of different elements with the same mass number but different atomic numbers.<br>Example:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2081\u2088Ar\u2074\u2070 and \u2082\u2080Ca\u2074\u2070<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both have a mass number of 40, but different Z.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wave-nature-of-electromagnetic-radiation\">Wave Nature of Electromagnetic Radiation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Electromagnetic radiation includes light, X-rays, UV, infrared, radio waves, etc. It travels through space as oscillating electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to each other and to the direction of wave motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Terms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wavelength (\u03bb)<\/strong>\n<ul id=\"h-photoelectric-effect-einstein-s-explanation-1905\">Photoelectric Effect (Einstein\u2019s Explanation, 1905)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When light of a certain frequency falls on a metal surface, electrons are ejected instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Observations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emission occurs only if the light frequency is above a threshold frequency (\u03bd\u2080).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of electrons ejected depends on light intensity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The kinetic energy of ejected electrons increases with increasing frequency.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Einstein\u2019s Equation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>K.E. = h\u03bd \u2013 h\u03bd\u2080<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>h\u03bd = energy of incoming photon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>h\u03bd\u2080 = minimum energy to eject an electron (work function)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bohr-s-model-for-the-hydrogen-atom\">Bohr\u2019s Model for the Hydrogen Atom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To overcome the limitations of Rutherford\u2019s atomic model and explain hydrogen\u2019s line spectrum, Niels Bohr in 1913 proposed a new model based on quantized electron orbits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-postulates-of-bohr-s-model\">Postulates of Bohr\u2019s Model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Electrons revolve around the nucleus in fixed orbits (called stationary states or energy levels) without radiating energy.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These orbits have fixed energy and are denoted as n = 1, 2, 3,&#8230; (called K, L, M shells).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The energy of an electron in an orbit is quantized.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As long as the electron stays in an orbit, its energy remains constant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy is emitted or absorbed only when an electron jumps from one orbit to another.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the electron jumps from a higher to a lower orbit \u2192 energy is emitted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the electron jumps from a lower to a higher orbit \u2192 energy is absorbed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy absorbed or emitted:<br>\u0394E = E\u2082 \u2013 E\u2081 = (E\u2099):<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For a hydrogen atom:<br>E\u2099 = \u201313.6 eV \/ n\u00b2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Energy is negative, meaning the electron is bound to the nucleus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As n increases, E\u2099 becomes less negative (electron becomes less tightly bound).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When n \u2192 \u221e, E = 0 (electron is completely free \u2192 ionization).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-total-energy-of-the-electron\">Total Energy of the Electron<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>E = Kinetic Energy + Potential Energy = \u201313.6 eV \/ n\u00b2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-explanation-of-the-line-spectrum-of-hydrogen\">Explanation of the Line Spectrum of Hydrogen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When an excited hydrogen atom returns to a lower energy level, it emits radiation corresponding to the energy difference between the two levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This series of lines observed in the hydrogen spectrum:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lyman series: n\u2081 = 1 (ultraviolet region)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Balmer series: n\u2081 = 2 (visible region)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paschen series: n\u2081 = 3 (infrared)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brackett series: n\u2081 = 4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pfund series: n\u2081 = 5<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dual-behavior-of-matter\">Dual Behavior of Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The dual behaviour of matter is discussed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-de-broglie-s-hypothesis-1924\">de Broglie\u2019s Hypothesis (1924)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proposed that matter (like electrons) also exhibits wave-particle duality,
