Body waves:<\/strong> They are a type of seismic wave that travels through the interior of the Earth during an earthquake. These waves are important because they help scientists understand the Earth&#8217;s inner structure. Body waves move faster than surface waves and are the first to be recorded by seismographs after an earthquake occurs. This happens because the Earth\u2019s outer core is liquid, which blocks S-waves and bends P-waves. Below are the tools used to measure them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Richter Scale measures the magnitude, or energy released, on a scale from 0 to 10.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Mercalli Intensity Scale measures the damage and effects felt by people, ranging from I (not felt) to XII (total destruction).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-effects-of-earthquakes\">Effects of Earthquakes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Earthquakes can cause:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ground to shake violently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Landslides and soil liquefaction (where solid ground turns to liquid).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Damage or collapse of buildings, roads, and bridges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tsunamis if the earthquake happens under the ocean.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-structure-of-the-earth\">Structure of the Earth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Earth is made up of layers, each with different materials and characteristics. From the outside going inward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-crust\">Crust<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The thin, outermost layer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oceanic crust is about 5 km thick and made of dense basalt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Continental crust is thicker, about 30 km on average, and made of lighter granite.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under mountains, the crust can be as thick as 70 km.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mantle\">Mantle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extends about 2,900 km below the crust.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Made mostly of solid rock but behaves like a very slow-moving liquid in some parts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The upper part of the mantle includes the asthenosphere, which is softer and allows the crust to move.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-core\">Core<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Starts below the mantle and goes to the center of the Earth (about 6,371 km deep).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outer core is liquid, made mostly of iron and nickel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inner core is solid due to extreme pressure, also mainly iron and nickel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-additional-layers\">Additional Layers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lithosphere<\/strong>: Crust plus uppermost mantle; it is rigid and broken into tectonic plates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Asthenosphere<\/strong>: Below lithosphere, softer and allows plates to move.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-volcanoes-and-volcanic-landforms\">Volcanoes and Volcanic Landforms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Volcanoes are openings in the Earth\u2019s crust where molten rock, gases, and ash escape to the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A volcano becomes active when it erupts or shows signs of erupting soon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Volcanoes can have different shapes and sizes based on the kind of eruption and the materials involved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-types-of-volcanoes\">Types of Volcanoes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shield Volcanoes<\/strong>: Wide with gentle slopes, formed by flowing basalt lava (e.g., Hawaiian Islands).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Composite Volcanoes<\/strong>: Steep and explosive, built from layers of ash and lava (e.g., Mount Fuji).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Calderas<\/strong>: Large, collapsed craters formed after a big eruption.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flood Basalt Provinces<\/strong>: Large areas covered by thick lava flows, like the Deccan Traps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mid-Ocean Ridge Volcanoes<\/strong>: Found under the ocean along spreading tectonic plates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-volcanic-landforms\">Volcanic Landforms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Volcanic landforms are features created by the movement and cooling of magma. Sometimes, instead of erupting onto the Earth&#8217;s surface, magma cools and solidifies beneath the surface. When this happens, it forms landforms known as intrusive formations. Gutenberg Discontinuity: <\/strong>The boundary between the mantle and the outer core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11.
