Good Morning, everyone. Today, I am truly honoured to speak about one of India’s most prominent and admired figures, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He is commonly known as the “Iron Man of India”. Patel’s life and achievements continue to inspire others today. He was bornon October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat. Patel grew up in a humble family and faced challenges from an early age. But his determination and courage helped him become one of India’s most recognised leaders. 

Patel initially preferred a simple life as a lawyer. However, he was strongly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals and soon joined Gandhi’s movements, leaving his law career. He became actively involved in the freedom struggle, playing a significant role in the Kheda and Bardoli Satyagrahas. His participation in the Bardoli Satyagraha earned him the title ‘Sardar’, which means ‘leader’.

Patel’s most significant contribution to India was after its independence in 1947. He took on the most difficult task of the time: uniting over 560 princely states into the Indian Union. Sardar Patel, the then-deputy Prime Minister and first Home Minister of Independent India, utilised diplomacy to persuade the princely states to join the Indian Union. Patel’s efforts resulted in India’s successful unification, which preserved its territorial integrity and formed the nation we know today. Without him, India could have become fragmented and unstable. Patel is sometimes referred to as the “Unifier of India” due to his remarkable achievements.
Aside from that, Patel played an important role in establishing administrative structures for the country’s government. As India’s first Home Minister, he established the groundwork for the country’s civil services, which he termed the “steel frame” of India. Even today, civil services are regarded as the foundation of governance in India.

His work serves as a reminder that unity is our country’s strength. In honour of his efforts, India constructed the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, on October 31, 2018.
