Sunita Lyn Williams (born September 19, 1965) is an American astronaut of Indian and Slovenian descent, a U.S. Navy officer and test pilot, and one of the most experienced space fliers in history. She has flown multiple long-duration missions to the International Space Station (ISS), completed numerous spacewalks, run a marathon in orbit, and served twice as commander of the ISS. Sunita Williams was born to Deepak Pandya (an Indian American) and Bonnie (of Slovenian descent). She grew up in the U.S., graduated from Needham High School (Massachusetts) in 1983, earned a B.S. in Physical Science from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1987, and later obtained an M.S. in Engineering Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Williams became a naval aviator and helicopter pilot, serving in numerous operational deployments including support missions during Operation Desert Shield and humanitarian relief after Hurricane Andrew. She attended the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and served as a test pilot before being selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate in 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
