high interest rates and pressure borrowers to repay loans promptly.<br>\u2013 In the unorganized sector, people work for low wages, which isn\u2019t fair.<br>\u2013 Sometimes, consumers receive less quantity or quality than expected, and producers charge unfair prices.<br>\u2013 Large companies manipulate the market by spreading false information through media to attract If consumers are dissatisfied with a product, they often stop buying from that brand or shop, placing responsibility on consumers for their purchasing decisions.<br>\u2013 Dissatisfaction with unfair rules prompts consumer movements.<br>\u2013 Unfair rules are imposed by sellers and act as a social force.<br>\u2013 The consumer movement in India began in the 1960s due to food shortages, hoarding, black marketing, and food adulteration.<br>\u2013 The government supports consumer organisations financially to raise awareness.<br>\u2013 Consumer groups were formed to address issues like malpractices in ration shops and overcrowding in road transport.<br>\u2013 In 1986, the Indian government enacted the Consumer Protection Act as a major step forward.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-consumer-rights\">Consumer Rights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e6f2fa\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>(i) Safety is everyone\u2019s right<\/strong><br>\u2013 Many goods and services pose health and safety hazards, requiring special attention.<br><br>\u2013 Consumers have the right to protection from goods and services that are hazardous to health or property.<br><br>\u2013 Producers must adhere to rules and regulations to ensure consumer safety.<br><br><strong>(ii) Information about goods and services<\/strong><br>\u2013 Manufacturers must provide information such as ingredients, price, batch number, manufacture date, expiration date, manufacturer\u2019s address, directions for proper use, and details about side effects and risks associated with their products.<br><br>\u2013 Consumers have the right to access detailed information about the goods and services they purchase.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-right-to-information-act\">Right to Information Act<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e6f2fa\"><tbody><tr><td>\u2013 The \u201cRight to Information Act\u201d was passed by the Indian government in October 2005.<br>\u2013 Its objective is to provide citizens with information about the functions of government departments.<br>\u2013 Three reasons led to the formation of the \u201cRight to Information\u201d Act.<br><br><strong>(i) Consumer\u2019s Right to Choice:<\/strong><br>\u2013 Consumers have the right to refuse to purchase goods and services they are dissatisfied with.<br>\u2013 This right ensures consumers can make decisions based on their preferences and needs.<br><br><strong>(ii) Seeking Justice for Consumers:<\/strong><br>\u2013 If a consumer denies a choice, they can seek redress for unfair trade practices and exploitation.<br>\u2013 Consumers have the right to compensation based on the extent of harm suffered.<br>\u2013 They can approach consumer forums or councils for assistance.<br>\u2013 The Consumer Protection Act established a three-tier quasi-judicial system at district, state, and national levels to resolve consumer disputes effectively.<br>\u2013 District-level courts handle cases with claims up to Rs 20 lakhs.<br>\u2013 State-level courts handle cases between Rs 20 lakhs and Rs 1 crore.<br>\u2013 National level courts handle cases exceeding Rs 1 crore.<br>\u2013 If a case is dismissed in a district-level court, consumers can appeal to state and then national-level courts.<br>\u2013 The Consumer Protection Act ensures consumers\u2019 \u201cRight to Representation\u201d by allowing them to appeal decisions.<br><br><strong>(iii) Learning to Become a Well-Informed Consumer:<\/strong><br>\u2013 The Consumer Protection Act emphasises educating consumers about their rights.<br>\u2013 It has prompted the establishment of separate Consumer Affairs departments in both central and state governments.<br>\u2013 These departments aim to inform and empower consumers with knowledge about their rights and protections.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-taking-the-consumer-movement-forward\">Taking the consumer movement forward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e6f2fa\"><tbody><tr><td>\u2013 The Indian Parliament passed the Consumer Protection Act on December 24, 1986, leading to the celebration of National Consumers\u2019 Day annually on the same date.<br>\u2013 Out of approximately 200 consumer groups in India, about 20-25 are well-organized and officially recognized.<br>\u2013 Despite the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act, consumer awareness in India is gradually increasing.<br>\u2013 However, the process of seeking redress for consumers has become burdensome, costly, and time-consuming.<br>\u2013 Consumers often need to hire lawyers to navigate legal procedures.<br>\u2013 Lack of cash memos in most purchases makes it difficult to gather evidence, complicating the redressal process further.<br><br><strong>\u2013 ISI and Agmark:<\/strong><br>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 ISI and Agmark are certifications for products like LPG cylinders, food colors, additives, cement, and packed drinking water.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 Producers must obtain these certifications, which ensure products meet specified quality standards.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><strong>\u2013 Hallmark:<\/strong><br>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 Hallmark is a quality certification for jewellery.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 It is issued by the Indian Standard Organization based in New Delhi.\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><strong>\u2013 ISO Certification:<\/strong><br>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certification indicates that a company, goods, or institution meets specific global standards.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 ISO\u2019s headquarters are in Geneva, established in 1947.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p
