On this beautiful day, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss my views on National Reading Day. On 19 June, the entire nation observes National Reading Day to honour the life and work of PN Panikar, also known as the Father of India’s Library Movement. Mr Paniker was a renowned teacher and educator from the Southern State of Kerala. This great man devoted his entire life to promoting literacy and education in India.

Many of us might have not heard about Mr Paniker because he was a teacher and not a Bollywood superstar or a politician. But what he did for the country makes him a remarkable intellectual.

On this Reading Day, I would like to discuss the importance of reading and how it can help us build a better future. Reading is more than just a skill; it is a gateway to endless adventures, vast knowledge, and profound understanding. Through books, we can travel to distant lands, experience diverse cultures, and step into the shoes of characters who challenge us to see the world through different lenses.

But there is a problem with today’s world. Reading requires patience, which many of us lack. We find sitting on a chair silently and reading for hours boring, claiming we can do a whole lot of activities in those hours. Surely we can, but those hours devoted solely to reading will do more than any other activity.

Considering the efforts of Mr Paniker, the Government, social media influencers and other intellectuals are encouraging people to read and learn more. As individuals, we can help bring a change as well by sharing books with friends, reading to someone, and exploding a new genre.
Books are more than just words on a page—they are the building blocks of our minds and the windows to our souls. By fostering a love for reading, we equip ourselves and our children with the tools to succeed and thrive in an ever-changing world.

Happy National Reading Day, everyone! May your literary journeys be ever-enriching and endlessly enjoyable.
Thank you.

Also Read: Speech on Importance of Reading

Long Reading Day Speech in English

Good morning, respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends,

Today, I feel honoured to speak on the occasion of Reading Day, a very important day that reminds us of the power of books and the joy of reading.

Reading Day is celebrated every year on June 19 in memory of Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker, also known as the Father of the Library Movement in India. He was a great teacher, librarian, and social reformer from the state of Kerala. He believed that “reading is basic to all learning,” and worked hard to spread the habit of reading, especially in rural areas.

In 1945, he started the Kerala Grandhasala Sangham (Library Association) with just 47 rural libraries. His efforts played a big role in making Kerala one of the most literate states in India. After his death on June 19, 1995, the Government of Kerala declared this day as Reading Day in his honour. Later in 2017, the Government of India also started celebrating June 19 as National Reading Day, followed by Reading Week and Reading Month across the country.

Now, let us understand why this day is so important.

Reading helps us in many ways. It builds our knowledge, improves our vocabulary, and develops our thinking power. It also helps in reducing stress and improving our focus. Reading books is better than spending time on phones or watching television because books make us think and imagine. As the famous children’s author Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Reading also plays a key role in the success of students. It makes learning easier and helps us do better in school. Even reading for just 15 to 30 minutes a day can make a big difference in our lives. Books are called our best friends because they stay with us, teach us, and guide us throughout life.

On Reading Day, many schools, colleges, and libraries organize activities such as book fairs, reading marathons, essay writing, storytelling, and speech competitions. Some even donate books to poor children or set up mobile libraries in villages. The P.N. Panicker Foundation also spreads awareness about digital reading and reading for all, including in rural and tribal areas.

The aim of celebrating this day is not just to remember a great person, but also to encourage a national movement of readers. In today’s fast and digital world, we must remember to take some quiet time to read. It will help us grow both as students and as human beings.

Before I end, I would like to share something that former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has shared with us. He emphasized that, “Learning gives creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge, and knowledge makes you great.” And the first step to all learning is reading.

So let us take a pledge today to read more books, to build a reading habit, and to share the joy of reading with others.

Thank you and have a wonderful Reading Day!

Also Read: Essay on Reading Day

Importance of Reading Day

Cognitive Development

Reading stimulates the brain, enhancing cognitive functions such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and comprehension skills.
