How is it Calculated? Complete Details

The approx value of Pi is 3.14159. It is the ratio between a circle’s circumference and diameter. If we divide the complete circumference of a circle by its diameter, we always get the ratio 22/7. Pi is represented by the Greek sign π.

Its exact value is unknown and cannot be computed using the available methods since it is an irrational number, i.e., a non-recurring and non-terminating decimal. The π is defined as a circle’s circumference divided by its diameter. It is a constant commonly used in all fields of science and mathematics.

Even if the circle’s size is the same, the value of Pi remains constant. Finding the exact decimal values of π is time-consuming. Supercomputers and complex algorithms are used to calculate the value of π to one million decimal places. For common use and convenience, the value of π in fractions is assumed to be 22/7 and in decimals to be 3.1415926.

What is Pi?

Pi is a mathematical symbol. The sign symbolises it π. It is the ratio between the circle’s circumference and diameter. The value of Pi is irrational. Thus, the exact value of π has not yet been determined.

π can also be defined as the number of times the diameter has been wrapped around the circumference of a circle. The approximate value of (π) pi is 3.14, or 22/7. The following illustration depicts the value of pi and its relationship to the circumference and diameter of a circle.

Pi Values in Decimal and Fraction

Pi (or π) is typically stated in two ways:

Value of pi in decimal

Value of pi in fraction

Value of Pi (π) in Decimal

The Pi value till the first 100 decimal digits is:

3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510 58209 74944 59230 78164 06286 20899 86280 34825 34211 7067

Value of Pi (π) in Fraction

Pi’s fractional value is 22/7. It is known that pi is an irrational number, which means that the digits after the decimal point are infinite and do not terminate. Therefore, 22/7 is used for everyday calculations. ‘π’ is not equal to the ratio of any two numbers; hence, it is an irrational number.

All Values of Pi (π)

In Decimal

3.14

In Fraction

22⁄7

Formula of Pi

The formula for calculating the value of pi is:

π = C/D

Where,

C is the circumference of the circle.

D is the diameter of the circle.

How to Calculate the Value of Pi?

Pi is an irrational integer with an unlimited number of non-repeating decimals. There are several techniques for calculating the value of pi to the hundredth of a place. The most frequent way to calculate pi is to take the ratio of the circle’s circumference to its diameter.

The value of π is calculated using the pi formula, which is:

π = (circumference/diameter)

Or, π = 3.14159 = 22/7

Thus, by drawing numerous circles and then calculating the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of the circle, we may determine the value of the circle. The table below illustrates the circle’s circumference, diameter, and ratio.

Circumference(C)

Diameter(D)

C/D

3.1

1

3.1

6.24

2

3.12

9.378

3

3.126

12.5678

4

3.141

15.7075

5

3.1415

Value of Pi in Degrees

The value of Pi in degrees can be simply calculated using the ratio of the circle’s circumference to its diameter. The circumference of the circle is 2πr, and its diameter is 2r, where r is the circle’s radius. Also, in the case of a complete circle, the angle subtended in the centre of the circle is 360°, and there are two half circles in a circle divided by a diameter.

The ratio of the circumference to the diameter yields the value of pi.

2πr/2r = 360°/2

π radians = 180°

Examples on Pi

A boy goes around a circle with a diameter of 100 metres; how far has he walked?

Solution:

Distance walked = Circumference

Circumference = π × 100m = 314.159 m

Therefore, distance walked =314.159 m

Find the circumference of a circle which has a radius of 12 cm.

Solution:

Given,

Radius of Circle (r) = 12 cm

Circumfernce of Circle (C) = 2πr

Value of Pi = 3.14

⇒ C = 2 ⨉ (3.14) ⨉ (12)

⇒ C = 75.36 cm

Calculate the circumference of the circle, whose diameter is 18 cm.

Solution:

Formula of Circumference, c = π × d.

Therefore, the value of d, we get;

C = π x 18

=3.14 x 18

= 56.52 cm

FAQs

What is the formula for determining pi?
The pi is a ratio that is derived from a circle.
