Furthermore, in the Hon\u2019ble<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leverageedu.com\/discover\/general-knowledge\/civics-and-polity-salient-features-of-indian-constitution\/\"><strong>Constitution of India<\/strong><\/a>, the mention of an autonomous state is done through the <strong>Sixth Schedule<\/strong>. Notably, most of the states are a part of North East India. Therefore, this gives power to the States to take care of particular areas like public order, police, education, healthcare, etc., independently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Financial Resources:<\/strong> Ideally, States should have control over sufficient resources to fulfil their responsibilities. However, the financial dependence on the Centre due to limited revenue generation abilities creates a strain on autonomy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Political Dimensions:<\/strong> Autonomy movements usually highlight the supremacy of the Central government. Moreover, in particular regarding discretionary powers like dismissing State governments (<strong>Article 356<\/strong>) or appointing <strong>Governors<\/strong>. In addition, States want greater political power in decision-making.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cultural and Linguistic Identity:<\/strong> State autonomy can also include the preservation and promotion of a State&#8217;s unique cultural heritage and language. Moreover, it led to the formation of separate States like Tamil Nadu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Northeast India: <\/strong>The region has witnessed countless movements for autonomy, separate states, or increased devolution of power within existing states, hence reflecting ethnic and cultural aspirations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tribal Movements:<\/strong> Several tribal communities across India have demanded autonomy to preserve their way of life and self-govern their regions. A well-known example is the Jharkhand movement which led to the creation of a separate state of Jharkhand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gorkhaland Movement:<\/strong> This movement seeks the creation of a separate state of Gorkhaland in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal for the Gorkha people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-centre-state-relations-in-india\">Centre-State Relations in India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand state anatomy in India, it is essential to understand centre-state relations in India. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Centre-State relations in India refer to the distribution of powers and responsibilities between the Union (central) government and the state governments, as outlined in the Indian Constitution. These relations ensure smooth governance and balanced power sharing in the federal structure of India. They can be broadly classified into three categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>1. Legislative Relations (Article 245 to 255)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This defines the distribution of law-making powers between the Centre and the States:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Union List (List I)<\/strong>: Subjects of national importance like defense, foreign affairs, atomic energy, and railways. Only the Parliament can make laws on these subjects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>State List (List II)<\/strong>: Subjects of local importance like police, public health, agriculture, and local government. Only state legislatures can legislate on these topics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Concurrent List (List III)<\/strong>: Subjects of common interest like education, marriage, bankruptcy, and forests. Both the Centre and the States can legislate, but central laws prevail in case of conflict.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Residuary Powers<\/strong>: All matters not covered in these lists fall under the Centre&#8217;s jurisdiction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>2. Administrative Relations (Article 256 to 263)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These articles outline the administrative responsibilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Centre can issue directives to States to ensure compliance with laws.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>States must exercise their executive powers without interfering with the Centre\u2019s laws.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In case of conflict or failure of constitutional machinery in a State (Article 356), the Centre can impose President\u2019s Rule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Centre also has the power to intervene in matters of national importance and to protect States against external aggression and internal disturbance (Article 355).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>3. Financial Relations (Article 268 to 293)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These articles cover the sharing of financial resources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Taxes<\/strong>: The Constitution specifies which taxes are collected by the Centre and which by the States.
