During the trial, Laxman Kumar and his family were alleged to be responsible for Sudha Goel\u2019s death. Sudha\u2019s family and lawyers suspected torture at the hands of her in-laws. After considering the evidence and arguments presented by Sudha\u2019s lawyers, the Trial Court convicted Laxman, his mother Shakuntala, and brother-in-law Subash Chandra, sentencing them to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-appeals-process\">Appeals Process<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Discontent with the judgment, Laxman and his family appealed to the High Court in 1983. High Court acquitted the accused, attributing Sudha&#8217;s death to an accidental fire caused by a kerosene stove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women&#8217;s groups protested against the High Court&#8217;s decision, appealing to the Supreme Court through the Indian Federation of Women Lawyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1985, the Supreme Court heard the appeal against the High Court&#8217;s decision. The apex court found Laxman and his mother guilty but acquitted Subash due to insufficient evidence.
