Capitalism is an ideology, an economic and political system characterized by private ownership. This means the private owners manage the production and the market-driven allocation of goods and services according to their will.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of Capitalism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Adam Smith, the father of modern economics, once said, \u2018It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their interest.\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Capitalism is considered a modern-world ideology, as there were hardly any traces of it in the medieval period. It was the British Industrial Revolution of the 19th century when the British Parliament issued a charter to allow private ownership of factories, mines, and railroads in the UK. Seeing the rapid industrialization in Britain, other European countries also joined the race.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Market Economy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Capitalism relies on a market economy where prices for goods and services are determined by supply and demand. Take, for example, the smartphone industry. In a capitalist economy, companies like Apple, Samsung, MI, etc. compete to produce and sell smartphones. These companies invest in research and development, manufacturing, and marketing to create products that they believe will appeal to consumers.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Profit Motive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u2018One of the fundamental principles of capitalism is the pursuit of profit. Everyone, from individuals to large MNCs, is engaged in economic activities to make a profit. Socialism advocates for collective or state ownership of the means of production. The idea is to eliminate or minimize private ownership in favour of public or community control.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018During the Cold War from 1947 to 1991, there was a war of ideologies between the USA and the USSR. The USA was a pro-capitalist economy and the USSR was pro-socialist. Both these countries and their allies were engaged in geopolitical tension.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018That was all in the history. Today, it’s crucial for us to acknowledge the criticisms and challenges that capitalism faces. Critics argue that it can lead to income inequality, as those who own more capital may benefit disproportionately from the system. Also, concerns about exploitation, environmental degradation, and the potential for economic crises have been raised.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
