The Jagirdari System<\/strong> was a land revenue system in India that played a key role in the administration of medieval empires. Under this system, rulers granted jagirs<\/strong>\u2014land revenue rights\u2014to nobles, officers, and officials instead of paying them direct salaries. Jagirdars were responsible for collecting taxes, maintaining law and order in their territories, and providing military support when required. Unlike land ownership, jagirs were revenue assignments<\/strong>, transferable and revocable by the ruler. What is the Jagirdari system?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Jagirdari System evolved from the Iqta System<\/strong> of the Delhi Sultanate (13th century), where iqtadars were assigned revenue rights over territories in exchange for military services. Under the Mughal Empire<\/strong>, particularly during Akbar\u2019s reign<\/strong>, this system was formalized and integrated with the Mansabdari System<\/strong>, where officials were assigned ranks (mansabs<\/strong>) and corresponding jagirs based on their position and duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Jagirdar<\/strong> did not own the land but had the right to collect revenue from it. A portion of the collected revenue was kept as income, and the remainder was sent to the imperial treasury. Jagirdars were also expected to maintain troops and ensure security in their assigned territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, especially during the decline of the Mughal Empire, the system became prone to corruption<\/strong>, exploitation of peasants, and weakened central authority.
