The flag\u2019s vibrant colours and emblem showcase and embody the rich culture and heritage that the country stands for. But have you ever wondered who designed the national flag of India? Who is the Father of the Indian National Flag?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pingali Venkayya<\/strong> was the designer of the National Flag of India. He was born in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh in the year 1876. Pingali Venakyya was a freedom fighter<\/strong><\/a> and advocated for self-governance. Behind this iconic tricolour lies the passion and tireless efforts of Pingali. Thus, he is given the title \u201cFather of the Indian National Flag\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venkayya\u2019s Journey to Design the National Flag<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Venkayya\u2019s passion for flag design began at an early age. He studied different flags from around the globe and researched their symbolism and history. His belief was a flag is a powerful tool for uniting people and inspiring them to fight for their nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1919, he presented his first flag to Mahatma Gandhi<\/strong>, who was the then leader of freedom movements. The design had two horizontal stripes: Red- represented Hindus and Green-represented Muslims. While Gandhi <\/strong><\/a>appreciated his efforts, he recommended adding a third colour to represent the other religions and communities of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venkayya continued the process of designing and experimenting with different colours and symbols. He kept in mind the ideals of Unity, Progress and Peace while experimenting. Finally, in 1921, he presented the design to Mahatma. This version of the national flag had the now iconic colours of Saffron, White and Green stripes with the Ashok Chakra in the centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final design was presented to the Indian National Congress<\/strong> where it was officially adopted as the national flag of India on 22nd July 1947.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  2. Significance of the Colors<\/strong> \u2013 Saffron signifies Courage and Sacrifice, White represents Peace and Truth and Green symbolises Growth and Prosperity.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Ashok Chakra<\/strong> \u2013 The\u00a0 Dharma Chakra is of blue colour which represents the Wheel of the Law, of Progress and the Cycle of Life and Death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Symbol<\/strong> \u2013 The central emblem is the Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoke wheel derived from the Lion capital of Ashoka<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Ratio<\/strong>\u2013 The flag has a length-to-width ratio of 3:2<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Fabric<\/strong> \u2013 The flag is made of Khadi which is hand-spun cotton fabric and symbolises self-reliance and economic independence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Design<\/strong> \u2013 The flag was adopted by the INC in 1921 and officially hoisted as the national flag of Independent India on August 15, 1947.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Respect for the Flag<\/strong> \u2013 It is inscribed in our Fundamental Duty to abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem. The Flag Code of India also defines the protocol for displaying and respecting the flag<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. National Flag Day<\/strong> \u2013 National Flag Day is celebrated every year on July 22.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Evolution of the Indian Flag <\/strong><\/a>\u2013 The design of the flag has undergone several changes and represented the rich history of India in the process. The first National Flag was designed in the year 1904 by sister Nivedita.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
