The founder of the Chauhan Dynasty was Vasudeva Chauhan, who began his rule around 551 AD, according to the Bijolia inscriptions. He is considered the earliest known ruler of the Sapadalaksha region, which included parts of present-day Rajasthan. Vasudeva had a special connection with the Salt Lake of Sambhar, a place that held both economic and cultural importance in early Rajput history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As described in the ancient Sanskrit text Prithviraj Vijaya, Vasudeva is said to have received the Salt Lake of Sambhar as a gift from a Vidyadhara (a mythical being), with whom he had formed a friendship. Decline of the Chauhan Dynasty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the powerful ruler Vigraharaja IV, the Chauhan throne passed to Prithviraj II and then to Someshvara. Their rule was quiet and did not witness major events. However, Someshvara\u2019s son, Prithviraj Chauhan III, became one of the most famous rulers of the Chauhan Dynasty. He ruled from 1168 to 1192 AD and was known for his bravery and leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prithviraj Chauhan was the king of Ajmer and Delhi and was born in 1149 AD. During his time, the Chauhans had a long-standing rivalry with the Chalukyas of Gujarat. However, Prithviraj remained neutral when a conflict arose between the Gujarat ruler and Muhammad Ghori of Ghur (Afghanistan). Though Prithviraj didn\u2019t help either side, the Gujarat king managed to defeat Ghori in one battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, Muhammad Ghori turned his attention towards northern India, where Prithviraj was expanding his empire. This led to the First Battle of Tarain in 1191, where Prithviraj Chauhan defeated Muhammad Ghori completely. But Ghori returned the next year, and in the Second Battle of Tarain in 1192, Prithviraj was defeated, captured, and later killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After this major loss, Ajmer and Delhi fell into Ghori\u2019s hands. He placed Prithviraj\u2019s young son as a puppet ruler in Ajmer, but Prithviraj\u2019s brother Hariraja later took back the city. Despite this brief comeback, the Chauhans had lost their power and glory. The remaining Chauhans moved to Ranthambore, where they ruled for some time. Finally, in 1301 AD, Alauddin Khilji of the Delhi Sultanate conquered Ranthambore, bringing an end to the last stronghold of Chauhan power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
