History of Women\u2019s Equality Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This day was established on March 8 to commemorate the day in 1920 when Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby handed American women the right to vote in a formal ceremony. Following the statewide Women’s Strike for Equality in 1970, Congresswoman Bella Abzug of New York submitted a resolution to designate August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in 1971. She did so again in 1973 while the debate for the Equal Rights Amendment raged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Significance of This Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is held annually to honour the accomplishments of women. The day also aims to draw attention to the initiatives put in place to advance gender equality.
