1. Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith: James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, created basketball at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, to keep students active indoors during harsh winters. He wanted a game that was less injury-prone than football.

2. Peach baskets were the first hoops: Instead of modern rims and nets, the first basketball goals were literal peach baskets nailed to a balcony. After each score, the ball had to be manually retrieved, which slowed down the game significantly.

3. There were only 13 original rules in basketball: Naismith wrote just 13 rules for the first game. Examples include: no running with the ball (you had to pass it) and no pushing or tackling. Today, basketball has evolved with hundreds of rules, covering fouls, shot clocks, dribbling, and more.

4. First basketball game score was 1–0: The very first game of basketball was played with 18 players (9 on each team) and ended with a score of just 1–0. It was a far cry from today’s high-scoring, fast-paced games.
