US excludes Nigerians from 2023 Visa Lottery

The US again excluded Nigeria from its Diversity Immigrant Visa Program 2023, making it 8 years in a row. The US has again neglected the most populous African country in the world among immigrants entering via this program.

Diversity Immigration Visa Program is a US government lottery program intended to allow applicants from Africa and other continents to get the United States Permanent Resident Card.

Around 55,000 applicants applied for visas to enter the US through Diversity Visa Lottery. Still, the US in this year’s program reported that over 50,000 citizens from Nigeria have relocated to the United States for greener pastures in the last five years.

The instructions for this year’s Diversity Visa lottery mentioned that “For DV-2023, natives of the following countries are not eligible to apply because more than 50,000 natives of these countries immigrated to the United States in the previous five years”

According to the Name Census, more than 300,000 Nigerians are living in the US. This report revealed that the total Nigerian population between 2015 and 2020 increased by over 100,000 people, per Nigerian Abroad.

The report also stated that New York City has the most significant Black immigrant population of any metropolitan area in the US, a total of about 1.1 million people in 2019. Miami has the second largest black immigrant population with a total number of 490,000.
