Noam Chomsky

Noam Chomsky, an American linguist completed his BA, MA, and PhD in the field of linguistics, from the University of Pennsylvania. Apart from being a linguist, Chomsky is also a philosopher, historian, political activist, and cognitive scientist. He is renowned for his theory of linguistics where he has proposed various ways of how people learn concepts and that every human language shares a common underlying linguistic structure irrespective of their socio-cultural differences. Chomsky is a highly cited scholar and also was a member of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University

John Legend

The second name on our list of University of Pennsylvania notable alumni is John Roger Stephens who is an American singer-songwriter, actor, producer, and pianist. Known professionally as John Legend, he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis on African-American literature from UPenn. Having released 6 studio albums, his biggest hits include his debut single “Ordinary People” and “So High”. The singer has also made several guest appearances in numerous songs and has sung a duet for Disney’s  Beauty and the Beast. John Legend is the first African American man to win all four major North American entertainment awards (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony).

Kwame Nkrumah

The next on the list of University of Pennsylvania notable alumni, is Kwame Nkrumah, the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana. He was a revolutionary and led Ghana to independence from Britain in 1957. After graduating in Arts and theology from Lincoln University, Kwame Nkrumah completed his Masters of Philosophy and a Masters of Education from UPenn. He was a political activist whose non-violent leadership and methods are used as examples of inspiration.

Beau Biden

Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden III, son of president Joe Biden is among the University of Pennsylvania notable alumni. He was an American politician, lawyer, and Army officer. Beau Biden graduated from UPenn and was a member Psi Upsilon fraternity. He went on to serve as the attorney general of Delaware for two terms after being a Delaware National Guard Iraq War veteran, Before he could announce his bid for governor in 2016, he died on May 30, 2015, at age 46 due to an unfortunate diagnosis of brain cancer.

Laurene Powell Jobs

Laurene Powell Jobs is our next personality among the University of Pennsylvania notable alumni. She is an American billionaire, businesswoman, executive, and the founder of Emerson Collective, a philanthropy group. Laurene Jobs is the widow of Steve Jobs, co-founder and former CEO of Apple. Laurene completed her B.A. in political science from the UPenn School of Arts and Sciences and a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Through her organization, Powell also invested in the Dial fellowship program. The program grants remarkable leaders with communications means and resources.

Jonathan Haidt

Jonathan David Haidt is an American social psychologist who is known for his studies in the psychology of morality and moral emotions. Haidt has also authored three books for audiences from various backgrounds that talk about philosophies, emotions, reasoning, etc. He completed his  PhD in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and also went on to become an assistant professor at the University of Virginia.

Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Banks is an American actress, writer, director and producer. She is acclaimed for her work in The Hunger Games series and  Pitch Perfect. Banks graduated magna cum laude with a major in communications and a minor in theatre arts from UPenn where she was a member of the  Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Apart from acting, Banks also wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the film Charlie’s Angels and hosts a show called Press Your Luck.
