The University of Hertfordshire is one of the top 200 institutions in the world, and thousands of graduates every year go on to achieve success after studying at the University of Hertfordshire. There are also a handful of household names and industry leaders who have also studied on the same campus, even if it might have been back in the Polytechnic days. Former students of this university had commendable performance and outstanding achievements 

About University of Hertfordshire

The University of Hertfordshire is a modern university based largely in Hatfield, in the county of Hertfordshire, about 35km north of London. Described as “the UK’s leading business-facing university”, Hertfordshire has more than 25,000 students enrolled from nearly 90 different countries. The International Student Support Team is fully trained to help with employment, visas, financial and personal matters. Free in-sessional English lessons are available for all international students and are tailored to be relevant to the course of study. Pre-sessional English courses are also available. Before term starts, the University runs a free airport collection service from Heathrow.

Notable Alumni of University of Hertfordshire

Sanjeev Bhaskar

Sanjeev studied at the Polytechnic of the University of Hertfordshire. The comedian is now best known for Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars and has been a regular on our screens for the past two decades. He landed a job as a marketing executive at IBM after his degree but soon found that he’d rather pursue comedy. While his degree might not be getting much use, it’s proved a sensible career choice, and he was awarded an OBE in 2006.

Kate Bellingham

Kate is best known for being the host of Tomorrow’s World between 1990 and 1994, and when she took a break from the screen, she was actually attending the University of Hertfordshire. She studied a Masters in Electronic Communication Systems from 1999 to 2003, and later returned to broadcasting. She’s also been a committed champion for Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

Upen Patel

Upen Patel is a model and film actor working in India. In addition to working in Bollywood films, he has participated in several television reality shows including Bigg Boss 8 and Nach Baliye 7. He also hosted MTV Love School with Karishma Tanna. He completed a Diploma in Film-making and Diploma in Scriptwriting from the University of Hertfordshire 

Owen Farrell

The Saracens and England rugby union star followed his dad into a sporting career but he did prepare for a backup career at the University of Hertfordshire. Owen moved south to St Albans as a teenager before studying for a Business degree at the university. As a student he was already signed for Saracens, one of Europe’s biggest clubs, and he admitted in an interview with the Guardian as a 20-year-old student “I’ve never even thought about having another job.”

Iain Dowie

The ex-footballer and manager had earlier begun to pursue a very different career. As a footballer, he was rejected by Southampton at the age of 16 and later decided to study a Masters in Engineering at what was then Hatfield Polytechnic. During all this he continued playing non-league football at St Alban’s City, then Hendon before Luton Town spotted him and football took over. While Dowie was born in Hatfield, he later went on to represent Northern Ireland receiving 59 caps.

Helen Lederer

Another comedian to study at the University of Hertfordshire is Helen Lederer. Helen broke through in the 1990s alternative comedy boom, starring in favourites including Bottom, Absolutely Fabulous, and The Young Ones. She’s been appearing on our screens ever since, including in the Ab Fab movie, a recurring character on Casualty and a stay in the Big Brother house in 2017’s celebrity edition.

Flux Pavilion

The EDM producer, DJ and writer Joshua Steele studied at the University of Hertfordshire where he joined bands and started producing music, before then going onto play at some of the biggest festivals in the world including Coachella, Reading and Glastonbury. His music was also sampled on Jay Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne, and he was referred to the ‘dubstep darling of the US’.

Alistair Spalding

Another almnus with halls named after him, Alistair Spalding CBE, is the Creative Director at Sadler’s Wells theatre. Alistair studied for a degree in Humanities at the University of Hertfordshire before starting to be involved within the arts. Since Alistair began programming for the theatre in 2000, before taking a more senior role in 2004, the London theatre has become a world-leading venue for dance. He’s since been awarded an honorary doctorate by the university in addition to his degree.

Alex Goode

Another rugby union international, Alex Goode studied at the University of Hertfordshire while also playing for Saracens. Goode has made 21 appearances for England during his career, and is currently out on loan to Japanese club NEC Green Rockets.

Lisa Lazarus

It’s not a usual career jump to go from a degree in Diagnostic Radiography in Hatfield to representing the UK in Miss Universe. However, Lisa enjoyed years of success in modelling competitions, being chosen as Miss Wales, Miss Central London and Miss Universe UK. Now she works in Dubai to pursue a career in aesthetics and starting a modelling academy in the country.

Gavin Fisher

Gavin Fisher studied mechanical engineering at the University of Hertfordshire before then becoming the Chief Designer for the William Formula One Team.

Luke Scheybeler

Luke studied Graphic Design at the University of Hertfordshire before going on to launch two highly-rated sports clothing brands, Rapha in 2004 and Tracksmith in 2014, as well as his own branding consultancy Scheybeler.

Abdulaziz Bin Abdullah

Prince Abdulaziz is the third son of King Abdullah, the former King of Saudi Arabia. The prince studied a BA in political science in 1986, before serving in a number of positions throughout the Saudi Arabian National Guard, as well as owning a land development firm.
