UK marks India’s 75th year of independence with 75 scholarships

The UK government has announced 75 fully-funded scholarships for Indian students to study in the UK. The scholarships have been announced to mark 75 years of Indian independence.

The British High Commission New Delhi made the announcement on GOV.UK website on 29 June 2022. The information was later also shared by the UK in India account in a Tweet.

The UK government has partnered with top Indian industries to offer these 75 scholarships to selected Indian students, who are going to study in the UK in September 2022. This is the highest number of fully-funded scholarships in the history of the one-year master’s program.

Companies like HSBC, Pearson India, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Sons and Duolingo are supporting this special initiative. HSBC India announced to sponsor 15 scholarships, Pearson India 2, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Sons and Duolingo together will sponsor 1 each in the 75 scholarships initiative.

Along with this, the British Council in India is also offering 18 scholarships for women in STEM. The scholarship will cover over 12,000+ courses, and will include six English scholarships.

The program will include Chevening scholarships for a one-year master’s program that will open opportunities for UK universities.

Alex Ellis, British High Commissioner to India present at the India Global Forum, said: “In India’s 75th year, this is a great milestone together. Thanks to the exceptional support from our partners in the industry, I am delighted to announce 75 scholarships for Indian students to experience the best of the UK.” 

Hitendra Dave, CEO, HSBC, also present at the event said, “We’re delighted to partner with Chevening for the ‘Chevening HSBC Scholarship’ programme. Our objective is to encourage young people with the potential to become leaders and decision-makers in their fields by leveraging the world-class educational facilities offered under this programme.”  

This scholarship includes tuition, living expenses and travel cost of the selected student for a year. The students will be selected on the basis of their work experience and some other listed factors.
