U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities

The U15 group of Canadian Research Universities is an association of 15 public universities specialising in research programs. These universities are also referred to as Regroupement des universities de recherche du Canada commonly known as U15. The headquarter is located in Ottawa and was established in 1991. It started with a representation of the interests of the members (provincial, and federal governments), and their concerns with affiliated research enterprises and research programs supporting research and development.

U15 Group of Canadian Universities: Overview

• The U15 Group of Canadian research universities has 15 total members. 
• These universities undertake approximately 80% of all competitive research universities in Canada. They conduct $8.5 billion of research annually. 
• This ultimately produces 75% of all doctorates awarded in the country. To strengthen the Canadian economy, the U15 group contributes $36 billion to it every year. 
• The group also holds 81% of all university patents.

How it Started 

Initially, they were established as a group of five universities based in Ontario. However, the u15 group has now become the group of most research-intensive universities in Canada. Every university in the group has its own educated and mandated program. The group aims to develop and provide a sustainable environment for higher education, cater determination to short and long-term research projects and contribute and add value to the research policies of Canada and other countries.

General Eligibility Criteria 

A candidate must meet the following criteria to study in Canada:

• To pursue a bachelor’s in Canada, a candidate must have completed their 10+2 from a recognized institution and must have achieved a minimum of 70% aggregate
• To pursue a master’s, a student must have completed a 4-year long bachelor’s degree with a minimum aggregate of 70%
• English language proficiency test scores of IELTS or TOEFL 
• GMAT/GRE scores may be asked to submit
