A group of Brooklyn businessmen signed a charter establishing a school for young men on May 17, 1853. The school’s earliest location was at 99 Livingston Street in Brooklyn, where it was founded as the Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute. The Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn was the school’s name from 1889 to 1973.
