Rajdeep Sardesai (born May 24, 1965) is an Indian journalist, news anchor, and author. He worked for India Today Television as a consulting editor and anchor. Before quitting in July 2014, he was the Editor-in-Chief of Global Broadcast News, which includes CNN-IBN, IBN7, and IBN-Lokmat. Sardesai was born to a Goan father and a Gujarati mother in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Dilip Sardesai, his father, was a former Indian Test cricketer, and Nandini Sardesai, his mother, is a Mumbai activist and former chair of the Department of Sociology at St. Xavier’s College. He attended Campion School in Mumbai until ICSE and then The Cathedral & John Connon School in Mumbai for two years of ISC. Following that, he earned an economics degree from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai. He subsequently went to University College, Oxford, where he earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in arts and law. In 2008, he was given the Padma Shri by the Indian government. the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism award for 2006 and the International Broadcasters award for coverage of the Gujarat riots in 2002. Rajdeep Sardesai was honored with the ENBA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.

Professional Life of Rajdeep Sardesai

Sardesai was the city editor of The Times of India’s Mumbai edition for six years after joining the newspaper in October 1988. In 1994, he began his career in television journalism as the Political Editor of New Delhi Television (NDTV). He was the Managing Editor of both NDTV 24X7 and NDTV India, where he was in charge of both stations’ news policies. At NDTV, he presented famous programs including The Big Fight.

On April 17, 2005, he left NDTV to launch his own organization, Global Broadcast News (GBN), in partnership with CNN and Raghav Bahl’s TV18.  The latter transmits CNBC-TV18, an Indian version of CNBC (in English), CNBC Awaaz, a Hindi consumer channel, and SAW an international station. CNN-IBN is the name of the new station, which has Sardesai as its Editor-in-Chief. It premiered on December 17, 2005. Sardesai’s business purchased a 46 percent share in Channel 7, bringing it under this umbrella as well. IBN7 was the new name for Channel 7.

Reliance Industries Ltd stated on May 29, 2014, that it will buy Network 18 Media & Investments Ltd, the parent company of CNN-IBN, IBN7, and CNBC-TV18.  RIL’s board of directors approved up to 40 billion (US$530 million) in funding to Independent Media Trust (IMT), of which RIL is the sole beneficiary, for the acquisition of control of Network 18 and its subsidiaries. Sardesai, the CNN-IBN editor-in-chief, and the whole founding team — editorial and management — resigned from the Network18 group on July 1, 2014.
