NSERC Scholarships: Eligibility criteria
To qualify for the NSERC scholarships you have to meet the eligibility criteria so that your application is considered for the same. The eligibility criteria is mentioned below-
- You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada as of the registration date to be considered for funding for the bulk of the NSERC Scholarships and Fellowships programmes (except for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships and Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships). Before and while it provides support, NSERC may ask for evidence of citizenship or residency status.
- You must not be considered ineligible to apply for and retain grants from NSERC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) or any other research funding body in Canada for reasons of violation of ethics or honesty requirements (including financial or scientific misconduct).
- For NSERC, you must have accounts in good faith, like having charged and/or returning all money owing to NSERC. It shall be at the sole and absolute discretion of NSERC to decide whether or not an account is in good standing.
- NSERC uses the degree completion date to determine the candidates’ eligibility. This is the date on which all the degree requirements have been completed, including the satisfactory defense and presentation of the corrected copy of your thesis (in compliance with the regulations of your institution). That is not the day of the concession or convocation.
NSERC Scholarships: Application Process
To apply for the NSERC Scholarships you have to follow the steps mentioned below –
- To summarise the method of qualifying for an award, NSERC has prepared instructional videos. These just have an outline. Read the relevant sections in the individual outlines for undergraduate, postgraduate or post doctoral programmes for more detailed information.
- The basic guidelines for the software to which you submit should also be read by you.
- There are a variety of deadlines to bear in mind when you apply for funding from NSERC, based on the sort of award you are receiving.
- If the deadline is a weekend or a federal holiday, your submission must enter NSERC by the next working day.
- There are also internal deadlines for certain universities; contact the scholarship liaison office for those deadlines. There will be no approval of late applicants.
Important Dates

- It is the applicant’s obligation to ensure that all applications, including transcripts and all attached files, are complete and comply with all the NSERC requirements and that the document is submitted before the deadline.
- Applications will be checked and ranked by the proposed or actual academic department/school of the candidate and sent to the Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies Office (OGPS). The Awards Committee of the OGPS shall review the applications and pick those to be submitted to the national competition. For submissions that may be forwarded each year the university is granted a quota.
- Applicants will be told if their submission has been accepted or not and will be sent to the national competition by the end of November.
