Importance of Hobbies for Resume

“What is your hobby?” Oh, I used to have one, but these days I’m just too caught up with work. No time for such unimportant things anymore”. Don’t many of us end up saying such things once we start working? But somewhere deep inside, we all know hobbies are far from ‘unimportant things’. Never give up on your hobbies because they are good not just for our happiness, but for our careers as well – you must have found yourself in a situation where you have to scratch your brains just to write 2-3 hobbies for your resume or CV. This blog puts forward the many reasons why you should never give up on your hobbies. Take a look!

Difference Between Hobby and Interest

Though we often use the words ‘hobby’ and ‘interest’ interchangeably, there is a major difference between the two of them. You might have added a heading like Interest or Hobbies in your resume or CV and not given it another thought. Well, it’s time to change that. Originating from a similar concept, hobbies and interests are differentiated in theory by your action i.e. hobbies originate from interests that you act upon. You might like reading about technology and mobiles. That is currently your interest. Let us suppose that you have decided to learn about rooting phones, or reviewing new releases on Youtube. The moment you start engaging in your interest it becomes your hobby. So when someone asks you why this is your hobby you can say that I review new technology by making Youtube videos. So when deciding hobbies for resumes and CV’s, make sure you add only those hobbies for which you have something to show. Why Should You Never Give Up On Your Hobbies?

From decreasing stress levels to opening up new opportunities, from giving a sense of achievement to establishing useful networks with professionally valuable contacts, a hobby can do it all for you. No matter how busy you get, you can always scoop out some time to invest in your hobbies. Here’s a list of reasons you should consider continuing with what you love the most:

1. Honing Skills

Generally, your hobbies are activities which you are already good at. If these are directly aligned with your career, then multiple benefits can be generated in terms of innovation and skill development. To take an example, if you’re good at acting and work for a company as a content writer, your creative mind could do wonders for you at your workplace.

2. Maintaining a Work-Life Balance

If you are constantly working in the office without taking any breaks, or without engaging in activities which you truly love, you will certainly notice that the quality of your work starts degrading sooner or later. A hobby works as a tranquillizer and keeps the creative instinct of your brain alive. It recharges your spirit and enhances the ability to relax.

For those of you complaining that you don’t get time for anything except work, you can try  scheduling your weekly timetable. You can fix time slots and days on which you will be devoting some of your time for pursuing your hobby. For example, if you like playing badminton, you can spare an hour or two in the morning or at night. Pay a visit to the nearby sports complex twice or thrice a week. These are little things that make a big difference in your personal as well as professional lives in the long-run.

3. Hobbies ‘May’ Act as Resume Builders

Mentioning ‘may’ in the above line has a purpose to serve. To many of us, including all of our hobbies in a resume might sound like a good plan. But reality has a different story to tell. You should only include those hobbies which are relevant to the job you’re applying for. Chances of getting through improve significantly if the interviewer finds your hobbies aligned well with the job and company profile. Of course, he or she will contemplate you inside out to know if you’re really good at that particular thing or if you just mentioned it to make your resume look good. So be really careful with whatever you write in your resume.

You can also use mutual hobbies to bond with superiors, important figures, or even clients.

Attaining a mastery in such hobbies can give you an edge over your co-workers when promotions are in play. Also, if and when you engage in networking on the basis of your hobbies, your superiors are more likely to remember you easily. So let’s say they are considering promoting someone and they see your name in the list. See where we are going here? Networking also presents opportunities to meet high-level professionals in other companies who might consider you for an opening or refer you for your dream job.
