MIT vs Stanford: Student Life and Exposure

MIT and Stanford are both large and varied enough to attract a broad group of students. Both colleges feature hundreds of student groups, including Greek life, and you’ll almost certainly discover yours at one of them. The student life at MIT and Stanford, however, differs in some ways.

When compared to MIT, Stanford’s school athletics are far more popular. Stanford is a Division I university with a reputation for drawing top athletes and having competitive sporting teams. While many MIT students are interested in sports, MIT athletics are far less popular, and there isn’t as much school pride during games as there is at Stanford. However, because MIT is a Division III institution, you’ll have a better chance at MIT if you wish to play a sport in college because the sports teams are less competitive.

Campus life is another distinction. Around 73% of MIT undergrads and 97% of Stanford undergrads reside on campus. Stanford is a suburban campus that is not adjacent to any other colleges, and the campus is frequently referred to as a bubble. MIT, on the other hand, is just a few miles from Harvard, Tufts, Boston College, and Boston University, as well as numerous other Boston universities. They have easy access to everything Boston has to offer as an urban campus. MIT students had an easier time interacting with other college students and experiencing city life than Stanford students.

MIT students have long been stereotyped as one-dimensional geeks, but they are so much more. While many MIT students are passionate about STEM disciplines, they also have a diverse range of personal and intellectual interests, as seen by the school’s many organisations and majors. Because Stanford is a larger institution and isn’t as STEM-focused as MIT, students may have a wider range of academic interests.

If you’re torn between MIT and Stanford, the best method to decide which school to attend is to conduct extensive study on both schools, and then assess which one best suits your desired college experience.
