What Happened in India on May 22?

1545 – Sher Shah Suri, Indian ruler and the emperor of Delhi for five years is known for introducing the currency of the rupee and establishing roads that helped trade and communication prosper in India was killed on this day in  Bundelkhand.

1772– Raja Rammohun Roy, one of the prominent socio-religious reformers also started the Brahmo Samaj movement in India and raised his voice against social evils like child marriage, and the Sati system was born on May 22.

1936–  The foundation stone of Brabourne Stadium, India’s first cricket stadium was laid on this day in  Bombay. The North Stand of the Brabourne was the headquarters of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and later transferred to the newly built Cricket Centre at the nearby Wankhede Stadium.

1963– India’s first glider “RG – 1 Rohini” took off from Runway 34 of Pinjore airport.

1984– Bachendri Pal became the first Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak.
