1772– Raja Rammohun Roy, one of the prominent socio-religious reformers also started the Brahmo Samaj movement in India and raised his voice against social evils like child marriage, and the Sati system was born on May 22.

1936–  The foundation stone of Brabourne Stadium, India’s first cricket stadium was laid on this day in  Bombay. The North Stand of the Brabourne was the headquarters of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and later transferred to the newly built Cricket Centre at the nearby Wankhede Stadium.

1963– India’s first glider “RG – 1 Rohini” took off from Runway 34 of Pinjore airport.

1993 – To raise awareness and understanding of biodiversity issues globally, United Nations marked  May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity. The theme for 2021 is “We are a part of the solution”.

2010 – Inter Milan beat Bayern Munich 2–0 in the Uefa Champions League final in Madrid, Spain, to become the first and only Italian team to win the historic treble

2015 – The Republic of Ireland becomes the first nation in the world to legalize gay marriage in a public referendum.

1935– C. V. Chandrasekhar was an Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, dance scholar, academician, dance composer, and choreographer born on May 22.  

1938 – Richard Benjamin was an American director and actor an also starred in various blockbuster movies such as  Goodbye Columbus, He & She born in New York
