The exam pattern of the ICSE class 10 Syllabus – English is quite simple. There are two separate papers conducted by the authorities each being 2 hours long. Here is a description for both of them:

Paper 1- English Language Syllabus

Paper 1 of English comprises of basic language rules that students must know. The exam consists of five compulsory questions. Here is a breakdown of each type:

English ICSE Class 10 Syllabus: Internal Assessment

Internal assessments are a crucial part of both the English papers. The ICSE class 10 syllabus for each of them is described below: 

Paper 1 (English Language) 

The school will be organizing 2 internal assessments for class 10 students. They will be scheduled at regular intervals. The main type of questions asked under these would be of listening and speaking types. In the listening skills test, a paragraph of 300 words will be read aloud and students will be asked to answer the questions based on it. On the other hand, the speaking skills test will include an oral presentation for about 2 minutes followed by group discussions.

Paper 2 (English Literature)

Based on the chapters enlisted in the English ICSE class 10 syllabus, candidates will be given a written assignment in between the academic session. These would include 2 or 3 tests that are to be answered in 1500 words total by the students. Questions will be framed along the line of-

  • Character/thematic analysis
  • Socio-economic, cultural, historical relevance / background
  • Summary / paraphrase
  • Appreciation of literary qualities
  • Identifying with a character. Putting oneself in the place of a character in given circumstances and explaining one’s actions
  • Imagine alternative outcomes or endings in a literary piece and the effect on all concerned.

  • To impart four major communication skills into students such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing of the language.
