Delay in visa appointments for Canada after US

After facing visa hiccups in the US, Indian students now face long delays for Canadian visas. Currently, more than 230,000 Indian students got enrolled in Canadian Universities making a positive contribution of approx USD 4 Billion to the Canadian economy as tuition fees.

The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has requested the Canadian authorities to look into the matter. Indian students are on the verge of missing their semesters due to visa delays.

“Highlighting these issues and the fact that Indian students have already deposited tuition fees with the Canadian institutions we requested the Canadian authorities to expedite processing of visa applications for students from India,” the advisory of the High Commission said in a statement.

It noted that Canada has emerged as a preferred destination for Indian students for post-secondary education. But the high commission added, “The processing of visas is a sovereign power of the government of Canada.” India and Canada share a strategic partnership that holds a commitment to democratic values, pluralism and rule of law.

The knowledge and talent flow between both countries is strong. India has become the top source of foreign students, with 230,000 Indian students studying in Canada.

The bond can be seen during the pandemic when both countries supported each other. On one hand, India supplied Covishield vaccines, Paracetamol and Hydroxychloroquine medicines to Canada. On the other hand, Canada reciprocated with the supplies of critical medicines and oxygen-related equipment.
