Headquartered in Washington DC, USA, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) was officially established by the CEO Kim Churches in 1881. It is a non-profit organization that promotes equality between women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. The organization has a national network of 170,000 members and supporters,1,000 local branches, and 800 college and university partners. The AAUW International Fellowships were designed to provide Latin American women opportunities to pursue graduate and postgraduate studies in the US. The program now offers scholarships to all those women who are not US citizens or permanent residents, to pursue their education in accredited USA universities and colleges.

About AAUW International Fellowships

The International Fellowships of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) were meant to give Latin American women the opportunity to pursue graduate and postgraduate studies in the USA. Women from all across the world can now apply for fellowships in the programme. AAUW has been investing in women who make a difference since 1888, making it one of the leading providers of money for women’s graduate study. International Fellowships are offered by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to women who are neither citizens nor permanent residents of the United States to pursue full-time study or research in the United States. Fellowships are available to study at authorised US universities at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

Applicants must have achieved the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in the USA and must have applied to their institutions of choice at the time of application. For a second year, up to five international master’s or professional degree fellowships are renewable. Candidates must have a strong academic record as well as a demonstrated dedication to women and girls. Recipients are expected to return to their home countries and become leaders in a variety of sectors, including the arts, sciences, academics, business, government, and community involvement.

Grant Details

The AAUW International Scholarship program encourages female students to pursue graduate, doctoral and postdoctoral studies at US universities. There are only a limited number of awards offered to AAUW International Fellowships recipients. Up to 5 master’s degrees / first professional degrees are renewed in the second year. The cost of the rewards for the various tiers is presented in the table below:

AAUW International Fellowships Eligibility Criteria 

AAUW International Fellowships are open to female scholars who are engaged in research in all disciplines of study or PhD studies in accredited universities. To receive an international scholarship, the applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of a country other than the USA 
  • Have an academic degree equivalent to a US undergraduate degree 
  • Be a full-time student for the scholarship year
  • Intend to return and pursue a professional career in their home country
  • Have an English proficiency level and must provide TOEFL scores or any other English test scores accepted by the scholarship provider

  • Academic Transcripts with Certified English Translation 
  • Proof of bachelor’s degree (graduate applicants only)

How to Apply for AAUW International Fellowships

Step 4: Recommendation, Documentation and Review

It is important to fill up the start page before sending a request for recommendations. Provide three LORs from professors of your previous institution. Attach all the official documents mentioned above and after the application is reviewed and saved, submit it. 

Criteria for Selection and Application Review

The panel meets once a year to assess all the grant proposals. The criteria listed below are used to determine awards. The panel’s recommendations are subject to final acceptance by AAUW. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis, based on available funding in a given fiscal year. AAUW does not comment on the deliberations of its award panels to ensure a fair review process. AAUW does not offer application evaluations. There are no provisions in place for fellowship proposals to be reconsidered. AAUW owns the applications and supporting documentation, and they will not be returned or stored for another year.

  • Applicants that are currently resident in their home nation, are from developing/emerging countries, or are from an underrepresented group in any region will be given additional consideration
  • Position on return to home country
  • Academic and/or professional qualifications
  • Proposed time schedule
  • The dedication of the applicant to the growth of women and girls in her own country
  • The quality and viability of the suggested study or research plan
  • Previous community and/or civic service in one’s home country must be demonstrated
  • The demand for specific knowledge or talent in the applicant’s country
  • Financial need
  • Motivation for graduate study or research

Note: Applications, supporting documents, recommendations, and other materials become AAUW’s sole property and will not be returned or kept for another year.

AAUW International Fellowship Regulations 

The AAUW International Fellowships award can be used to cover educational costs, living expenses, and the care of dependent children, among other things. As long as travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars does not exceed 10% of the fellowship, it is acceptable. The fellowship payment is subject to a 14% or 30% tax depending on relevant tax treaties and statuses. The following are not covered by AAUW International Fellowships:

  • Indirect costs
  • Publication costs
  • Purchase of equipment 
  • Research assistants 
  • Previous expenditures, deficits or repayment of loans
  • Institutional costs
  • Tuition for dependent’s education
  • Travel to or from an applicant’s home country
  • Travel to or from the fellow’s research location, if abroad. (It does not include fellows of GWI members with AAUW approval to study or research in a country other than their own)
